What would be the purpose of the moon base? Except for being cool as strawberry float, which goes without saying.

Two purposes spring to mind:

1. It would serve as a stable, long-term base of operations for mining the lunar crust (if there is anything to mine), conducting scientific experiments (including atmosphere-free telescope arrays), the inevitable commercialization of space (moon hotels for the mega-rich) and probably clandestine, intelligence gathering purposes as time goes on.
2. It would act as a useful launchpad for missions further out in the solar system; Mars, Enceladus, Titan etc.

Also a lunar theme park, just like in Futurama, but that falls under the commercial aspect.

Atmosphere free research arrays and launch staging bases would be the big ones.

Plus, its proof of concept on a lot of interplanetary base stuff. The moon is far away, but plenty close enough to get to to try new base stuff on.

Low gravity bumper cars, multi-axis waltzer, magnetic helter skelter, bouncy colony, mechanical space bull.

As long as it doesn't turn out like that theme park in Space Jam, I'm game.

A catapult that fires you into low orbit and you float around half the planet into a waiting net

That's like setting out to climb Everest and setting up base camp on your driveway.

Actually, it's worse than that, it's like climbing to mount Everest but first shipping off all your gear to base camp and then trying to assemble it on site in bad weather.

Seriously, unless you have a functional mining and manufacturing industry on the moon there is not zero point in sending all your stuff there and then leaving the moon again. You might as well just go straight from Earth to your destination and skip out the logistics of landing and taking from the moon for no real reason.

Launching from the Moon in significantly reduced gravity, along with the lack of atmosphere, means that a launch needs a hell of a lot less fuel to get off the ground. You're also not at the mercy of the weather screwing things up at the last second.

Well, you are at the mercy of solar weather. Considerably more so than here.

You still need to get everything up there in the first place. To launch things from the moon, you first need to launch them from Earth to get to the moon.

This combined with some kind of space elevator would most likely be our best option for space travel/exploration.

We should probably explore the solar system first.

*edit*

Dammit you spotted it.

I know I changed it anyway, but our solar system is in the galaxy too. :P
