I think the point is you can't say you don't like it if you have never seen it.

Why not? I could list loads of books/films/games that i haven't read etc.. that i know i wouldn't like. Sometimes you just can tell.

I disagree. I never thought I'd like playing American Football, but now I have practice twice a week and play a game on Sunday.

I disagree with you.

As soon as I heard about flexible colonoscopies I knew I wouldn't like them and when I had one my preconception of them was pretty much confirmed. They are strawberry floating awful.

So what have we proved here kids?

Is sci fi like American Football or is it akin to having a flexible camera rammed up your arse?

On the face of it a flexible medical camera, with robotic arms whose sole purpose is to slice bits out of your colon/intestine, which are then examined by a man in a white coat in a sterile environment is a lot more sci fi than running about a wet and muddy field.

Not that I'd ever want to tell people what they should and shouldn't like, but I do find it a bit sad if someone immediately dismisses sci-fi/fantasy as, if I can quote Mogster's colleague, "made-up bollocks". It shows a lack of imagination, in my opinion. And if it's not that, then perhaps it is down to the perception of fantasy being geeky. Which is probably worse to be honest.

That's not to say people shouldn't prefer their fiction to be more grounded in reality of course, but it's the automatic dismissal of it that I find a little sad. Purely for the fact that these people are missing out.
