I'm actually surprised he went, don't like the bloke but he really should stay in place until Westminster deliver on their promises. One thing you can't doubt is that he passionately loves his country and genuinely wants the best for them.

Rumblings tonight that the Westminster leaders are starting to pull back on their promises, Salmond really could have taken them to task and started an anti Westminster movement across the entire UK. At the moment we only have UKIP and Farage taking that role. :|

For the record, I think Westminster need to deliver on their promises as a priority. Park the English issue until after the election. If they don't deliver what they promised then that is a strawberry floating disgrace and Scotland should be entitled to secede from the Union.

This is what you were saying a week ago :

Salmond is such a slimy, nasty little politician. He is now trying to turn it into team Scotland vs Team Westminster. I really hope Scottish voter see through his campaign. I have never seen anyone be so stealthily racist and continue to get away with it.

Is it any wonder the man left?

I'd have added extremely to the start of that sentence, TG.

There are 20% more NO voters than YES voters. That is not narrow.

It's like 390,000 votes, not a huge margin in a national vote.

In a nation of half a million it's a huge margin, in a nation of 500 million it's miniscule. In Scotland where the population is 5million (?) It's not huge but it's pretty comfortable.

Yeah percentage is far more relevant in this case.

Fair play to Salmond; he was a very good politician, easily the most skilled manipulator up here. I actually think he seems a decent guy as well, won't be particularly sad to see him go but I think he leaves an impressive record.

Surely sturgeon will be next FM, she'll hopefully bring her slightly more left wing policies to fruition as well.

Indeed 390k is a clear majority in a country the size of Scotland.

Strange. The polls in the lead-up which were reporting ~the same results were described as being 'on a knife-edge'. 7.5% of the country's population, and 10% of the voting number, is somewhat narrow. At the very least, referring to the origin of this semantic debate, it is not firm.

Meh.

Let's not debate this, it could only go the way of pointless pedantry.

They'll have an election within the snp afaik but it'll definitely be sturgeon.

Taking the long view I can understand the practical reasons for him standing down. It might take fifteen or more years before the SNP can get a mandate for another referendum and by that time he could be getting on a bit in years. There would be questions about his ability to lead his party let alone lead a newly independent state into a difficult transition period. You might be talking about plan that stretches about three decades in scope.

I think he can retire (not really, since he will still stand for elections) with some pride through because Scottish nationalism is now at an all time high. He did not win the war but arguably he contributed to creating the grounds for victory even in defeat.

I don't think "picking a side" is a good idea. You should vote for whoever runs with the best policies and has the best intrests for the country come election time. Putting a sign in the ground and saying "I'm voting for x for the rest of my life" is a very bad idea. As a voter you have the power of change, a power which you give up if you decide to baselessly support one party for the rest of your days.

Especially in a system we have now where all 3 of the major parties are so similar, it's foolish to support one over the other as as a voter you're allowing them to do whatever they want, rather than voting for the best party when the time comes.

I wouldn't vote for any of the three major parties because they're so similar. None of them know what they're doing.

Choosing a side doesn't mean you're getting married, you're allowed to change your mind if you're unhappy you know. Do you think we should switch off until the run up to the election?

Yeah Nicola Sturgeon is pretty much a shoe-in for the job I reckon although I'm sure there's some due process to be observed.

My opinion of Alec Salmond has fluctuated greatly over the years, but I've always considered him (sometimes grudgingly) to be a canny politician. I think he has conducted himself with dignity and accepted defeat with magnanimity.

I wonder if he'll now be off to the Hoose Of Lords.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

It'd be nice to see the man off with a bit more strawberry floating grace than calling him "dear leader".

Must be hugely disappointing for Salmond but no, I have zero sympathy for the man. In fact I'm delighted he isn't going to be leader of his country.
