This thread has been alright after the results came in, and if we're going to keep things civil everyone has to drop the "no spine  " pish, counter-pish and counter-counter-pish.

Interesting analysis. Everyone already knew the 4 Yes regions were the poorest, but this is a bit more rigorous.

The message I'm getting from what I've been reading is that people with better paying jobs and more education were less likely to vote yes. Hardly surprising, really; radical ideas often gain the most footing among the poorest, least educated, most destitute parts of society. That's why bread and circuses exist.

Ugh, those scenes in Glasgow were horrible. I'm an Englishman who would have voted no if I'd had the opportunity, and I'm strawberry floating ashamed that those knuckleheads put a cross in the same box as I would have.

[iup=3569494]Meep[/iup] wrote:I will believe it when I see it; already cracks are appearing now that they are out of the 'danger zone'. Cameron is going to be sweating it out just get his party to agree to anything and Labour are going to be highly resistant to anything that may reduce their power in Westminster, which is what they really care about.

Ed Miliband talking about not letting the Tories play politics here is hilariously disingenuous of him. Here, at least, Cameron's political wishes share the stage with what is morally right. In a devolved state, the West Lothian question has to be answered. And that answer is obvious - Scottish MPs should not be able to vote on exclusively English legislation. Yes, this could strawberry float Miliband if he has a narrow majority at the next election. So?

Thankfully most of the twitter/facebook rumours eg. about stabbings, arsen and possible deaths seem to be untrue. Hopefully the neds have gone home and the city can get back to some kind of normality today.

I agree. Morally he or labour have no case to argue against it. As u say its obvious why they wouldnt want it. It would great a similar situation to that often seen in the states where one party may have a majority in congress but not in the senate and struggle to get bills, laws etc through. However the argument to this is that mps are supposed to vote for what they believe is correct rather than what their party tells them to do. But we all know that rarely happens.

Utterly deplorable behaviour. People like that don't deserve a vote. You could understand (never condone) some bitterness stemming from heartbreaking disappointment that might lead to unrest but when your side of the debate has won? strawberry floating scum and like Eighty and any other rationale Pro Union supporter - nothing to do with us or our views and wishes.

On a lighter note - Miliband is doing a fine job of losing the next election isn't he? Utter buffoon.

It was actually the older generation who pushed the no vote through, more than anything else. Misinformation about pensions (your pensions will run out) and the reliance on conventional media which peddled the line.

The Times has an interesting take on last nights violence. Salmond must have taken a really healthy pish into Murdoch's chips

Thats just an opinion. You cant say that the younger people were more or better informed. He majority of younger scots ive spoken to or heard seemed to want independence because of the evil english government taking all their oil or because of things that happened sometimes 100s of yrs ago. I dont believe this is why 1.6m voted yes though. Very few people would have the time and intelligence to research and make an informed decision. This goes for all elections. Most people are swayed by family, friends, hype, what seems to be cool and sometimes a one off incident that makes someone not want to trust one side more than the other.

This is from The Scotsman, which was vehemently anti yes, so much so it's Sunday paper (Scotland on Sunday) ran a cover likening the SNP to the Nazi party

It turns out that Ashcroft only interviewed fourteen 16-17 year olds. His poll is therefore rubbish, and it's a disgrace that it's getting so much coverage as it doesn't tell us anything. I hope that one of the major polling organisations runs a proper poll soon.

Both Labour the Conservatives long ago abandoned the intergenerational contract in favour of narrowly appealing to middle-aged home owners. Start charging tens of thousands of debt for university because, hey, all our voters already went for free and structure policy to ramp up housing prices because, hey, all our voters are already home owners. Not really surprising that the youngest feel the most to gain from splitting from the UK. Put in the perspective of Westminster raising tuition fees whilst the Scotland endeavours to keep higher education as open as it was in the time of their parents then it would seem obvious who has your best interests at heart.

Fortunately for Westminster, most teenagers now qualifying to vote are politically apathetic and don't seem to realise how spectacularly shafted they have been in the erosion of their terms of education, housing and employment rights. The three main parties probably have nightmares about them catching on.

You're on the internet. You can be friends or acquaintances with someone from different countries in this day and age.
