Think I prefer the original actually, with nothing done to the background.

Ah, cheers, I'm pleased with it for a first go, I can spot some stuff wrong with it though. Might do a banana or an onion or something before I try and move on to big-boy art. The apple took me more or less all evening, about five hours maybe.

It really is good Karl. Assuming you used Photoshop, how did you get that smudged effect where the reds and green roll into each other? It's like a chalk/pastel effect. It's looks ace. I wanna know the ins and outs of drawing in Photoshop before I try something proper. I drew the below Joker when I first got my tablet about 3 years ago but it was using a different program. I can't remember what it was called, otherwise I'd re-download it right now, but it was amazing. It was just like using real paint, like you could use watercolours that would run and dry as if it was real. And you could proper blob on acrylics and stuff. It was awesome!

Probably Painter, maybe ArtRage.

ArtRage! That was it! Thanks OldSoulCyborg. Are you new to the forum? I don't recognise you. Welcome, if you are! And welcome if you aren't! Think I'll stick with Photoshop to learn that first but will definitely see about aquiring ArtRage again. Cheers.

Kil, depicted as a potato headed manbaby. See, hes Scottish see, thats why hes ginger, thats science that.

Also this is hilarious and in fact looks exactly like Kil. Took me ages to realise that's actually a dummy, not a bow tie and that's a nose, not a little smiling mouth.

A little more progress on my portrait. A lot of the work was in the shading and finalising shapes before I can start the detail. Plus the layers are now sorted much better in PS.

The way I found of blending was, put big blobs of the two colours next to eachother, set my brush to opacity controlled by pressure, and use the eye dropper to select one colour and lightly stroke into the other. Then use the eye dropper to select the overlay area and repeat the process until you get a gradient going. I guess I tried to do this in such a way that my strokes added to the overall form of the apple but I didn't really do that very well and ended up scribbling a lot. I've never done any traditional painting so things like how best to place brush strokes elude me.

I've done digital painting #2! Onions are harder than apples.

Image

I was going to do the whole stem (and do the shadow properly) but it's like 5am so I knocked it on the head. :P The shape is, like the apple, a little fat and stodgy; I need to spend time getting the form of the sketch right I think. Still, I learned a lot messing around trying to paint the onion itself so I can't complain about how it turned out.

Karl is strawberry floating good considering he's never been one for art before. I tip my hat to him. But a word of advice Karl, no matter how good your work turns out, even if everyone disagrees with you, you'll always find something wrong with it. It's just the curse of being an artiste, I'm afraid.
