I wasn't too big on it when I played it, then again kart racers have always been a bit slow for my liking.

The bosses were an absolute atrocity. Seriously, some of the most frustrating bosses I've ever encountered - all in one game.

I loved this game IMO this was slightly better than Mario Kart when playing solo!

The fourth game that I picked up for the N64, and amongst my most fondly remembered. I enjoyed Diddy Kong Racing so much that's odd to reflect upon the disappointments it went on to inspire in me.

I loved its characters to such an extent that I was crestfallen when it transpired that only three of them would get their own games. I was so sure that Timber the tiger--my favourite character in the bunch--would get his own Banjo-Kazooie-esque adventure, by virtue of his fairly compelling appearance. Regrettably, this adventure never came to be, in spite of internet rumblings of a "Timber 64"--which, though false, aren't entirely far from the truth; recently, Kevin Bayliss disclosed that Timber was considered as a Twelve Tales protagonist--that's the game that went on to become Conker's Bad Fur Day.

The greatest disappointment that I suffered consequence of Diddy Kong Racing was actually the cancellation of its sequel, Donkey Kong Racing. I still remember watching the video-tape of trailers for upcoming GameCube games that NGC Magazine compiled--and Donkey Kong Racing stood tier-to-tier with Star Fox Adventures and Smash Bros. Melee as one of my most-anticipated games for the system, such was the extent to which I'd enjoyed the original. The mind boggled at the prospect of a bigger, lusher Diddy Kong Racing--one that would reintroduce all the characters I'd grown to love and one that would rekindle the possibility of those characters achieving their own games. With Diddy Kong Racing sporting one of my favourite N64 soundtracks, too, I further anticipated the musical score that would accompany this sequel. Rare's acquisition of Microsoft followed swiftly after I saw the trailer, though, and little of the game was exhibited--which I suppose is a blessing, insofar as it meant that I didn't get hyped up to heart-breaking levels.

I always used Pipsy, though the first time I completed the game I had to use Tiptup to beat the first Wizpig battle.

strawberry floating TT was impossible to beat in the Time Trials. Great game tho :mrgreen:

I did every frigging T.T. race apart from one. One!! I think it was Crescent Island as well.

I largely stuck to Tip Tup, and I remember being disappointed that Banjo was so heavy and unwieldy (though, after playing as Tip Tup, all of the cast seemed heavy and unwieldy and I never did get used to anyone else, really).

Like Uppa, my younger self was quite pleased at the prospect of seeing spin-off games with the rest of the DKR cast, and with B-K on the horizon there were loads of rumours going around of a Conker and a Timbur game (the official magazine mentioned it being almost a matter of fact that this would be released after Twelve Tails).

For me - a friendless loner - the single player meant that I much preferred it to MK64. I got that for my birthday and then DKR with my birthday money a week later, and the Adventure Mode meant that it was permanently glued into my cartridge slot until I bought GoldenEye a few months later.

I remember thinking it looked amazing - Frosty Village made a massive impression on me when a friend brought his cart round before my birthday - and obviously the music was probably the catchiest soundtrack ever.

The Octopus boss was a right pain in the arse, mind. I loved the boss encounters, but they (and the silver coin challenges and the T.T. races) really did require flawless runs at times.

Did anyone here manage to beat the Second Adventure?

Nay. Never bothered. Myself and Rex McGee did a speed run of the game a few years back though, finished at around 3hrs 30 (all amulet pieces, all trophies, etc).

Yup. After I had Mario and Mario Kart for a year and played them to death, I had DKR for another year before my next game. I beat every TT Time Trial too, and it was a massive surprise when I unlocked him. It's a shame the DS version had so many stupid flaws, like the rubbing boost :fp:

One of Rare's finest, i really don't care what anyone says, this is one of my favourite games of all time. I have completed it dozens of times and it just never gets old and some of the boss fights never get easy either. Fantastic music, fantastic characters and a real challenge, i sometimes wish Nintendo would take a leaf out of DKR's book when it came to their single-player escapades in Mario Kart.

Tip Tup is the only player i ever play as and this game is absolutely perfect at Christmas, i do wish Rare could get back to this level again.

What was the DS version like?

was there ever a wheel released for the N64, you'd think there would be just for the massive popularity of this and Mario Kart, ever one i knew had DKR, MK, wave racer and golden eye, they were like the top 4 in my small N64 group, 3 of those could have used a wheel.

There were wheels, but not an official Nintendo one. In fact, I don't recall Nintendo ever releasing an official wheel for any console, other than the bit of plastic you get with Mario Kart Wii.

I've never used a wheel that gave me as much control as a standard pad. I had one for Christmas one year with a copy of Driver, and almost went insane trying to do the driving test thing. Trying to collect the silver coins would send me over the edge.

There were n64 wheels but they only worked with games like top gear rally and F1.
