Warner Bros. just officially announced Scribblenauts Showdown for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with a 9th March release date.

There are multiplayer modes for two players (with 25 mini-games) and four-players (with card-based strategy gameplay) which rely on the series' trademark word-based gameplay.

And there's a more typical sandbox mode too, which allows players to solve objectives by coming up with the right combination of words.

I had huge fun with Super Scribbs on the DS and I enjoyed Scribbs Unlimited on the Wii U... but I'm really unsure about this new entry in the series! Showdown appears to be focused upon party gameplay and it has been made by a new developer rather than 5th Cell, the creators of the series.

The game does feature single-player gameplay in the form of the sandbox mode but I am cautious about the title; it's definitely one that I'll await reviews for. I hope that my apprehension is unwarranted :) .

Oof - this seems to be getting a bit of a pasting in reviews with most suggesting mediocrity at best. It's a shame as the earlier games were fun. It feels like Warner has tried to revive the franchise but only through a seemingly low-budget effort.
