Chalky and I are playing now and we can't remember the name of our starting island and are now lost.
How can we find out the name of the island we started on?

I chose solo adventure so does that mean I won't run in to other players? Not seen a single person yet.

No you should do man.

Also about the storm, I feel your pain, happened me in the Alpha a few times. Surprised you didn’t see others, every other ship is a person or real crew.

You can go to any outpost to turn in your missions (unless it tells you to go to specific one). You can look on your ship map and follow the lines back to where you came from.

Unfortunately neither of us can remember what it was called and now we've given up and will restart tomorrow with a pen and paper handy to jot down the names of places as otherwise it's just hopeless.

That’s unfortunate the first quests are usually really near the out post you started on. It was more than likely whatever outpost was nearest to you on the map.

Someone called Rob Beddall, claiming to have been an artist at Rare until a year ago, has posted some less than positive insight into the game’s development, in response to a post on Reddit:

Username Beddall. Seems legit but this is the internet etc. Also seems a little disgruntled with his experience working there.

A friend's brother, James Thomas, is a programmer at Rare and has been for quite a few years. Haven't spoken to James myself, (admittedly I don't know him as well as his brother, Matt, and have only met him a few times at Halo Lan games), but a few friends who regularly game with him online says how much James has enjoyed himself working on SoT. Not saying this Bedall chap is lying, but his thoughts are at odds with James's. Guess everyone's experience is different in such an environment.

So yeah had a great time last night but I will share my concerns on things that I posted about a few days before launch.

As far as I can tell, so far, the game seems to be quite light on content. Now I have faith in Rare to remedy this over time but if you're going to ask for nearly full price for a game it's a tad deceiving. If it was exclusive to Gamepass (as in €10/£8 a month) and not on sale as such it'd fare much better in terms of value for money.

I enjoy the sailing an awful lot and the ship encounters with others are really enjoyable, the horde forts are a great way to get more of this happening. That said, the enemies are all skeletons, sure some have different traits (shadow ones can be killed easier in daylight or when you shine lantern on them/Gold ones slow down a lot if you throw water on them) but it's quite light on the ground. I know non skeleton enemies are coming but again, why not at launch?

I'll keep tipping away at the game though as I do enjoy myself and it's genuinely a ball with a few players. There's enough to be doing on a ship unless the journeys quite far, one person needs to be at the helm, at least one other should be in charge of sails and then another needs to be on crows nest and one more to stock up cannons and check the map and relay directions. I'll keep on going reaching slowly but surely towards pirate legend status thus opening up the private cave thing....no idea what it does apart from you have your ship permanently at it or something.

Does anyone else think the clothes are massively expensive? an eye patch for 6000g! I mean a normal chest comes in at about 250, maybe later on in quests, the cursed chests will balloon in value.

I was thinking about the fact inventory doesn't save between sessions. It has to be that way, doesn't it? If not people could quit as soon as they were attacked and save their cargo.

Though maybe there should be some way to save once docked at a safe harbour. Either way it should warn you if you're going to lose stuff when leaving.

Update:
- Patch coming early next week game side to fix items disappearing.
- Achievements have been turned off effectively (they'll still activate when turned back on)
- Numbers have been mental, at peak 5000 people a minute were joining
- The open Beta was the biggest number they'd seen, the launch has been 3-4 times that number.
- Gold will eventually be given to everyone, it's taking its time coming back down from the server.

I did an introductory hoard quest, sold the chest, and got the gold and was credited with a completed voyage, but the "gold earned" counter on the commendations (?) screen didn't increase. Is that because the achievements etc are being glitchy or did I do something wrong?

It's all glitchy at moment, you'll get everthing eventually you didn't do anything wrong. Their advice is keep playing and eventually you'll get all the gold, quest levels etc when server sends them back down to you.

Last night we left like 5 chests in at once and about 5 minutes later we all got the 2k we should have. Times will vary. Achievements that you have unlocked won't show up for a while either as they are last on list to fix (they switched them off to lessen the stress on server) they will unlock though and you will get them at some stage.

So it turns out I have a friend playing this, so I might have a look at the 2 week free Game Pass trial and give this a whirl.

Cheers, figured it was something like that. I'm not focused on those details yet, but wanted to check I wasn't off course.

As said above, the gold is taking its time reaching players. I did a number of quests last night, but the amount of gold I had stayed the same even after selling about five chests and a skull. The servers are struggling at the minute handling things, so at least Rare are trying fix it with the maintenance and patches.
