We’ve been blown away by the community’s response to the game, with more than 4M people having played since launch. Seeing Sea of Thieves establish itself as the best-selling new IP for Xbox this generation

Image

Image

Releasing in July, Cursed Sails will bring a new threat to the seas in the form of terrifying skeleton ships. We will be introducing these to the world by way of a time-limited campaign, providing a new threat and challenge for players to take on for exclusive rewards. Beyond this, they will remain as emergent threats in the world for players to take on. We are also introducing a new ship type – the Brigantine – for up to three players to adventure on. This is the first new ship players will be able to get their hands on, and we are committed to continuing to expand the Sea of Thieves fleet.

Image

In September, Forsaken Shores will reveal a new part of the world that will test the skill and nerve of even the most hardened crews. This is a volcanic area, and any crews setting sail into this part of the Sea of Thieves will be committing to an arduous, difficult voyage filled with danger. Rocks will rain down from the skies, the seas will be rough and every adventure will be fraught with peril. Accompanying this, we are also introducing a Row Boat for players to use, supporting them in navigating this perilous new world.

Before all that though, we will be beginning our regular in-game events on June 12, when we introduce the time-limited Skeleton Thrones event to Sea of Thieves. The events will give players new goals and rewards on a regular basis, outside of our Content Updates and the time-limited campaigns that accompany them. We are thoroughly excited to get the first of these into players hands soon!

Ahoy pirates!

Battered and broken by the cannon fire of an entire sea of adversaries, the Hungering One has returned to the depths and can no longer be summoned. Does this mean the waters are safe to sail again? Not for long. She may be the mightiest of her kind, but she is not the only one of her kind. From the next patch, the surface will be breached by others following in her wake. A new age of predators has dawned and things will never be the same again...

For now a different kind of thrilling adventure has arrived! The first of our regular events introduces Skeleton Thrones. Patch 1.1.2 also brings further improvements for our colourblind pirates and multiple fixes for known issues.

Bilge Rat Adventures - Skeleton Thrones
Do you consider yourself a well travelled Pirate who knows the map of the seas like the back of their hook? Combine this with eagle-eye precision with your cannon skill and you may well earn your crew some fine booty this week!

Skeleton Thrones Event – The Skeleton Thrones are the latest addition to the world of Sea of Thieves. These thrones require a good sense of discovery to find, and for some an even steadier aim to reach. There are 5 small Thrones and 5 large Thrones, the small requiring just one pirate to sit on, but the larger requiring pirates to be sat on it from more than one crew. Look high, look low, and look within…

Bilge Rat Progression Screen - Bilge Rats now have their own dedicated progression screen! This information can be found on the front page of the progression screen via the [Menu] (controller) or [Tab] (keyboard) buttons. Chart your progress through the Skeleton Thrones event on this screen, not to mention getting some important clues as to the location of these elusive thrones.

Bilge Rat Doubloons – The Bilge Rats trade in their own currency, they don’t have time for gold or any of that official stuff. Each Commendation in the progress screen details the amount of Bilge Rat Doubloons it unlocks with a total of 100 Doubloons available through the Skeleton Thrones event.

Bilge Rat Cosmetics – Spend your Bilge Rat Doubloons on exclusive time-limited items too! You have until the 26th of June to purchase the Bone Crusher Hat, Jacket and Dress – priced at 20 Doubloons per item.

Bilge Rat Trading – If you’re feeling a thirst for a little extra gold in ye’ pocket or fancy some Reputation in any of the three Trading Companies, the Bilge Rats can also pull a few strings and allow you to trade your Doubloons towards a bit of progress. These latter progression items will be a permanent part of the Bilge Rat shop and aren’t time limited, so make your choice wisely!

Bilge Rat Titles – Completing five of the smaller Skeleton Thrones will unlock a unique Pirate Title, and finding all ten will unlock a unique Pirate Title. These titles will unlock straight into your Vanity Chest for maximum bragging rights.

Updates

Colour Blind Accessibility - Filters can now be applied from within settings to assist with red-green and blue-yellow colour blind pirates.
Merrick's Shanty - Merrick's shanty has been added to the list of playable shanties.
Sailor Drum - The Sailor Drum has been given to all players. Find it in the second page of your item radial.
Sailor Speaking Trumpet - The Sailor Speaking Trumpet has been given to all players. Find it in the second page of your item radial.

Customisation Variety

Drum selection - Admiral, Bilge Rat, Sea Dog and Sovereign drums have been added to the Equipment Shops on their respective Outposts!
Speaking trumpet selection - Admiral, Bilge Rat, Sea Dog and Sovereign speaking trumpets have been added to the Equipment Shops on their respective Outposts!
Rainbow flag - A new flag has been added to all pirates' flag inventory! Article 1 of the Pirate Code states that, "Everyone is welcome on the Sea of Thieves regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, nationality or creed."

Performance Improvements

Further improvements to load times and streaming of islands.
Multiple server and client crash fixes.
Further improvements and optimisations for all platforms are ongoing.

Fixed Issues

Players will no longer continue to endlessly hear the capstan audio upon visiting the Ferry.
The armoury will now correctly have an 'All' tab.
Pirates will no longer appear cut-off when previewing items in the vanity or equipment chest.
Flame VFX on campfires and lanterns will now appear correctly.
The option to lock FPS to 90 now correctly appears in settings.
Equipping the Majestic Sovereign Dress no longer applies a strange mark to the back of your Pirates neck.

Known Issues

Some players travel in an unintended direction, when fired from a cannon.

Patch Notes 1.1.3 -

Calling all well-travelled pirates! The Skeleton Thrones Bilge Rat Adventure is in its final week, so get your hands (or hook) on the Bone Crusher jacket, dress and hat before they are removed! The Bilge Rats have gone out to some of the remotest locations within the Sea of Thieves and are encouraging would-be challengers to find these Thrones out there in far-flung parts of the world.

As mentioned last week, other Megalodons have now emerged to join the ranks of the Kraken and sharks to present a new permanent threat in the seas. Patch 1.1.3 also brings with it key performance improvements and fixes for known issues.

Updates
Megalodon - Since the retreat of The Hungering One back into the deep, there have been reported sightings of other Megalodons terrorising the Sea of Thieves. It's been discovered that these new Megalodons have different personalities – some seem to turn tail at the sight of a Galleon, whilst others are said to be just as unforgiving as The Hungering One!
Gold bag icons - The icons for the Bilge Rat gold bags have been updated to better show the value of the gold within!

Performance Improvements
Reduced frequency of client hangs on Skeleton Forts.
Significantly improved stability when loading new areas.
Multiple server and client crash fixes.
Further improvements and optimisations for all platforms are ongoing.

Fixed Issues
Resolved an 'X Marks the Spot' location on Kraken's Fall where the chest was impossible to dig up.
Grand Admiral Hull livery on the Sloop now correctly matches the Galleon.
Resolved an issue causing the PC client to hang upon closing.

Known Issues
Galleons currently have an increased turning speed.
Some players travel in an unintended direction when fired from a cannon.
Being poisoned by a snake can show the VFX a second time.
Bilge Rat Doubloons have not been correctly rewarded to a number of players who earned them through the Skeleton Thrones event.
We are investigating a resolution for this and will share information when available.
The Hungering Deep rewards were not received by a number of players who earned them.
We are currently rolling out a fix to this issue which will award missing rewards from The Hungering Deep. This will take some time, so keep an eye on the weekly patch notes to see when this rollout is complete.

New Event live now:

Image

Gunpowder Skeletons Event
Carrying a gunpowder keg, skeletons can now rush towards you, light their fuse and... BOOM, off to the Ferry you go! The Bilge Rats are challenging all brave pirates to defeat them in various ways, some less conventional than others! Keep an ear perked for a burning fuse, and a finger on the trigger... good luck!

Explosive Force
When detonated, gunpowder kegs now have the force to rock and push ships.

Fuses
When holding a gunpowder keg, players can now light a five-second fuse by pressing the primary action button (Right Trigger on controller or left click on mouse).

Patch Notes 1.1.4

Ahoy pirates!

This week introduces the second Bilge Rat Adventure – Gunpowder Skeletons – and ends the Skeleton Thrones adventure. Those time-limited cosmetic and Doubloon rewards are now at an end, but for anyone who earned Doubloons during the event, they will remain in your wallet. The Skeleton Thrones themselves will also remain part of the world, along with both the Commendations and Titles, so if you encounter a new pirate to the world of Sea of Thieves don’t forget to point at the Thrones and let them know how many attempts it took you to reach Marauder’s Arch!

Patch 1.1.4 also brings with it multiple improvements to the mechanics of gunpowder kegs, skeleton aim changes, key performance improvements and fixes for known issues.

Bilge Rat Adventures - Gunpowder Skeletons
Vigilance, a loaded gun and your best running shoes are all critical for this explosive Bilge Rats Adventure!

Either some of these riddles are being vague or I'm being very obtuse.
Look for the impaled remains, it said, on the North-West beach. So look I did for some impaled remains. And continue to look I did. Eventually, I found the place I was looking for. And was it the thing I had been expecting? No, it was a giant skull hanging from a shipwreck's bow. Which technically is impaled remains, and something I had passed numerous times in my search.

Sea of Thieves' latest limited-time event is an underwater hunt for deadly mermaid statues

These health-sapping edifices are located all across the Sea of Thieves, although most can only be found by diving deep beneath the waves. The general idea behind this latest event is to encourage crews to get wet and start exploring of one of the game's more under-utilised areas: the shallows (and not-so-shallows) surrounding Sea of Thieves' multitude of islands. And as a further encouragement, valuable items, such as artefacts, skulls, and treasure chests, will now spawn on the seabed, waiting to be pilfered.

The overall goal is to find and destroy as many of the new Cursed Mermaid statues as possible, racking up event-only doubloons as a reward. Unfortunately, not all statues are cursed equally; each will heal itself if not attacked quickly enough, but strong curses will require the combined pummelling of up to four players simultaneously in order to destroy. Unlike previous multi-pirate event goals, however, you won't need to team up with other ships to complete the challenges, and it's possible to do the whole thing with a single four-person crew.

Executive producer Joe Neate also notes in today's accompanying developer video that Rare will be unveiling a new trailer and announcing the release date of Sea of Thieves' next big update, Cursed Sails, next week. This is the second of six large-scale content expansions planned for release in 2018, following on from May's largely excellent The Hungering Deep.

Given that The Sunken Curse event is currently scheduled to run through July 25th, however, it seems likely that The Cursed Sails - which introduces a new roaming ghost ship threat, the three-person Brigantine vessel, and more - will launch on or close to July 26th.

Megaladon was following me for a bit yesterday, I accidentally fell into the ocean, nearly shat my pants!

Image

:dread:

Also made a pretty bad decision after using a Gunpowder barrel to get rid of those sunken mermaid statues, all went well until I decided to blow up a Gunpowder barrel carrying Skellie!

New Content To Include Skeleton Ship AI Enemies and the Brigantine Ship Designed For Three-Player Crews

As part of our ongoing commitment to deliver new Sea of Thieves content throughout the year, Cursed Sails will offer our biggest update yet at no charge for those who own the game or access it through Xbox Game Pass. Players will now be able to battle terrifying new skeleton ships, set sail in the new three-player Brigantine ship and form Alliances with other players to take on bigger challenges and share greater rewards.

This permanent new content will be introduced into the game through a special time-limited campaign, Cursed Sails. Offering players a range of unique rewards, this three-week campaign will see skeleton ships terrorise outposts and challenge pirates to do battle on the seas. A story-driven side quest will also allow players to investigate the source of the skeleton scourge.
