Is the game world in this going to be big enough to keep players coming back?

Here's what we know what will be added on or after release -

Two completely new quest types (Merchant and Bounty) as opposed to only one (Treasure hunting) type in the Beta
The Kraken (big boss battle on sea)
Global events
"Athenas Fortune" - some kind of end goal
More enemy types / more variations for skeletons and possibly evil mermaids as enemies
More islands
A lot of different animals with different rarity level legendary epic etc. (Parrots, pigs, fishes, snakes, chicken and more)
Harpoon guns (on ships?)
Complete ship customization
Pirate creator
Figureheads for ships (unicorn, zeus, swordfish, squid, spinal, skullheid, lantern, shark, poseidon, parrot, mermaid, lion, dragon, dove, banjo, anglerfish and more)
More types of food: Coconuts, pineapples and pomegranates
New game mechanic - Potions: probably curing, poisoning and resurrecting etc.
More Weapons: boarding axes, heavy sword, rapier etc.
More music instruments (Banjo etc.)
Skeleton parrots
More player emotes
A gooseberry fool ton of more customization items for ... Everything
Possible wieldable bread, fishmeat, sharkmeat, scrubbrush, mango and dice
+ Things we don't know about anything yet

I managed to connect to a game this weekend, me and another (random).

Just as I loaded in to the world I saw someone run off... I guess it was the random. I was in a pub on some island... I spent about 15-20 minutes walking around trying to find a boat. The only one I could saw was out in the sea, so I tried to swim out when a shark spawned in front of me a few seconds later... so I returned to the island again.

Closed the game.

It dwarfed PUBG's twitch viewing figures over the weekend. :shifty:

Genuinely considering buying an xbone for this, Rare Replay, Sunset Overdrive and ReCore. That feels like an almost justifiable library of console exclusives now.... but then I'd have to pay for online for Sea of Thieves right? :(

Yep, maybe cdkey has cheap live codes. Sunset Overdrive, Recore Definitive Edition plus Sea of Thieves (when it releases) are on game pass btw - £8 a month.

Game pass is the best thing MS has done in a long while, that's super tempting

My first experience was also a lot of aimless wandering with no idea what to do. My second try was even less inspiring - got matched with 2 randoms who both immediately invited me to join their party. So I join them on their ship. Next thing I know, they've locked me in the brig and booted me from the party.

Closed the game.

As much as I'd like to play this game, I morally object to the glorification of terrorists of the sea.

The pirate theme would get on my nerves after a while.

Whenever anyone at work mentions pirates, the conversation descends into pirate pun bingo. I strawberry floating hate that. This game would be no different.

It all looks fairly aimless, to me. Awesome bants with pals though, I’m guessing.

You're not that far off tbh. I was very disappointed that the Beta had less to actually do than the Alpha. I understand that they want to keep some things for launch but it made the game seem extremely shallow (pardon the pun).

I'm highly excited for a few reasons though, namely the list of stuff Monkey posted and little tid bits from the Sea of Thieves Podcasts which say you'll have non skeleton enemies and bounties on non dead pirates. The systems and gameplay are excellent, they've nailed the ships and navigating, the movement and gun play is also very good, the sword play needs work a little I reckon. Despite the issues with Beta (I had none) when you get into game, it doesn't feel like you're online as such, there's no perceivable lag or glitching, the animation on other real players is such that you could fully expect them to be NPCs.

The progression system is what I'm buoyed by most. It's also going to be quite a divisive feature I reckon. I hate that other games make me grind to level up because I haven't the time so this having a progressions system that is almost entirely based on cosmetic items and more complex quests suits me fine. As Podcast Unlocked's Ryan McCaffrey called it, it's "Destiny for Dads". No matter how much you've played the game, a new player will have the same tools at their disposal barring maybe some specialised weapons, no more having to be the same level as other players is massively appealing. Sailing on the high seas on what is easily the best water ever seen in video game form is very relaxing, the boat creaks the waves crest and splash onto the deck but then intersperse the islands that have skellies and can have quite spooky caves, especially at night and that changes up the pace. Seeing another real ship though is quite brilliant. It's not PUBG in the panic because you need to sail towards each other but it is exhilarating. I'd happily play on my own ship but I'm hoping that we can get a regular crew together.

A new 7GB+ update came out for the beta which has been datamined by a couple of people -

There has been an update to the closed beta, so I rescanned the pak and compared it to the pak of the previous version (1.73.5774.2). My new findings can be found below.

All merchants now feature a talk animation
Lots of female-exclusive animations added
More animations for chicken, snake and pig (run forward scared, turn, startle, hunger)
Beards, belts, dresses, eyepatches, gloves, hooks, hair and boots in wardrobe and added to shops
New clothing styles: Kraken, Ferryman, Blackdog, Sovereign and Bilgerat (all include most of the above-mentioned new clothing items)
A separate weapon-shopkeeper
Admiral and Bilgerat-themed weapon skins for blunderbuss, cutlass and flintlock (available in the new weapon shop)
New kraken animations (IdleToDefeated, HoldingToDefeated etc.) and particles (roar mouth, underwater powerslam)
Fort-chests
A new location called "Legendary_Hideout"
Lots of new npc_ghost_crew character variants
New variants of the shipwright added
Curse (skull) cloud above certain islands (that you can see in some of the trailers)
Different forms of skellies: Bone, metal, plant and shadow. Each form has their own death particles and sounds.
New kraken figurehead (possibly just a rename)
Added a mirror to Captains' Cabin
Kraken-themed music as well as sound effects for hitting the kraken with a cannon (just like when hitting player ships)
Individual kraken tentacles can die
Gold hoarders NPC voice lines: "Welcome", "Goodbye" and one called bridge. (other merchants' voice lines are not yet included in the game)

here's what I found in addition:

Ship figureheads:
anglerfish
banjo
dove
dragon
lion
mermaid
parrot
poseidon
shark
skullhead
squid
swordfish
unicorn
zeus
A Premium Shop, this is a big one..

A mast breaking animation plus repairable cloth, strong hints at mast and sail destruction.

Kraken ink and eyes, perhaps lootable

level 10 repuation cap on all factions, presumably level 50

Rainbows

Snakes may be able to be charmed

Makeup and Tattoos

Bounty Mug Shots

Voice Box music file, singing perhaps?

Captain Quarters Bird cage

Sword Rack, Rifle rack and Pistol Rack for the Galleon

Files for curses

Clipboards for the merchant voyages

Fireflies

Jolly Roger flag!

Wetness mask, should mean that your chaarcter can actually get wet

From a couple of Pioneers who are playing the new build -

The current Pioneers build adds lots of stuff and makes a huge difference gameplay-wise. Too bad it's all under NDA.

It even includes so much more than what was datamined.
