Played about 3 hours on my own last night. Thoughts:

Just the sailing itself is fun. Particularly having to do all the different bits yourself. Ran aground a few times and figured out how to repair the hull easy enough.

Ive been reading this thread so had a bit of an idea of what you needed to do but think it would have been fairly easy to figure out even if I'd not.

I couldnt figure out what I needed to do for my quest. It was a merchant one about chickens. Id seen chickens on some island but when i wanted them for the quest went to Chicken Isle and but there was none there. Just forgot about that in the end.

My biggest let down is there doesnt seem much point in just exploring an island as there doesnt seem to be anything on them.

You need to take a chicken cage/coop from the merchant with you to catch a chicken and they don't tell you where to go you have to check an island yourself for one. The Gold hoarder quests are easier.

On the Island thing, you'll probably have to explore them more when you get a 3-4 part riddle treasure quest. Other than that, we found quite a few chests and box's of spices just laying about on some islands, also, you can never have enough cannon balls or bananas so loot barrels on the islands.

If you see something shiny on a beach it's usually a valuable piece of treasure or a message in a bottle leading to another quest.

Playing music for Snakes is a really nice way to deal with them. Makes it much easier to walk up and smack them with the sword.

Did about an hour solo last night and did another Bounty quest. Had to abandon my first attempt at the island as I had popped back to my ship to drop off a chest I found when I noticed a Galleon heading my way. Cheesed it away and managed to give them the runaround, drop the chest off at a trader and head back to the Island. Lots of Snakey bastards (It was called "Snake Island" after all), but the Accordian/Hurdy-Gurdy made them easy enough.

Getting the hang of the sailing now.

Hopefully get a crew together tonight for some Piratey antics!

Username Beddall. Seems legit but this is the internet etc. Also seems a little disgruntled with his experience working there.

A friend's brother, James Thomas, is a programmer at Rare and has been for quite a few years. Haven't spoken to James myself, (admittedly I don't know him as well as his brother, Matt, and have only met him a few times at Halo Lan games), but a few friends who regularly game with him online says how much James has enjoyed himself working on SoT. Not saying this Bedall chap is lying, but his thoughts are at odds with James's. Guess everyone's experience is different in such an environment.

He's not disgruntled as such reading it he just thinks the game lacked direction and content.

He's a contractor who's contract wasn't renewed, this is life and that's what clients do, the thing I find funny is he claims Rare pay a "minimum" for artists while Microsoft has tonnes of money but, going through an agency, if he wanted more money he should have asked for it, so in a big way it's his own damn fault. I don't understand why make a contesting point of that after 5 renewals without presumably being bothered about money until after the fact.

Artists with zero self esteem again.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Well the melee combat is pretty terrible. Think really basic Skyrim combat. (and yes I realise skyrim combat is already really basic!)

I can fully believe they haven't worked on that much.

This is the worst part of the game by far. The skeleton forts become very tedious because the combat is so shoddy.

I find this game utterly baffling. The total lack of any explanation for the mechanics is the real head scratcher.

The might-as-well-not-be-there NPCs are weird as well. Like they ran out of money for voice acting.

This would be ok if there was lots to do but it seems to be a sandbox with three actual toys and not much you can do outside of that core loop. Even the ones with lots of shacks and piers on them seem to be totally abandoned.

As mentioned, the combat is rubbish, but not in a “it’s supposed to be slapstick” kind of way, just totally wooden. Killing a snake is a chore.

I really want to like it but a lot of the decisions are, as I mentioned, baffling.

I read that reddit guy’s posts. Definitely seems like he’s got a case of sour grapes but at the same time a lot of what he’s saying is totally believable. Everyone keeps on banging on about how great the water is but I’ve yet to see how it affects gameplay.

Yeah had fun with you guys earlier on. Especially once we got the audio sorted and Monkey and I could actually hear each other.

It really wasn't a display of efficiency though. Poor boat was battered and bashed and we really made an arse of ourselves trying to take out that one guy in the sloop.

Looking forward to more group sessions though as it is far more enjoyable than single player.

I just love all the interactions you can in this game.
I'd just pulled up at an island, and before jumping off I notice another sloop nearby. I wait. It pulls up with a bit of distance between us, and I notice that he's waving. I pull out the telescope to make sure, and sure enough he is. I wave back. He then starts cheering, I start cheering. I then pull the sleeping action, and that's when I notice another person swimming back to that other sloop. Since I had no treasure at the time, it didn't worry me and I didn't sink their ship. I just watched it sail on then pulled out my map, ready to loot the treasure from the island.
And... let's not talk about the fact I lost three treasure chests because I'm an idiot who didn't look for holes in his hull.

Just listened to the last podcast again and they mention/hint at some stuff post launch.

- Under water Reefs that will have items of gold
- A fishing guild seems to be coming
- More quest givers/trading companies
- Seasonal and timed events
- Non Skeleton enemies are definitely coming

They also said that development hasn't stopped on anything, like the launch is just a starter date but in house they are saying that nothings changed, they're still working on adding stuff.

I hope some of this comes sooner rather than later.

Definitely needs more things to do.

Right now it feels like a game that's had it's "main" questline taken out, leaving only the side-missions.

I'm still enjoying it though and hopefully that feeling will last long enough for them to start bulking it out a bit. I'm happy enough for this to be my dip-in-dip-out GaaS until Division 2 arrives. If it can hold my interest.

One comparison I found myself making was to Star Trek Bridge Crew. Someone calling the shots, while the other players control the various systems. If they could combine the missions from that, with the open, Pirate world they've built it could be something really special. Similarly, if Bridge Crew had included a large open-galaxy to warp around in with lots of side activities (As well as more mission content) it would have been amazing.
