Sea of Thieves Insider Programme offers chance at testing early builds

"We will be looking for different kinds of people at different stages."

Sea of Thieves developer Rare is looking for player feedback on its upcoming open-seas multiplayer pirate game. How will the studio get feedback for a game that isn't out yet, you ask? Simple: it will offer prospective players early access to the in-development title should they sign up for the just announced Sea of Thieves Insider Programme.

Now signing up for this programme doesn't necessarily guarantee that you'll receive a code for the upcoming title. During the sign-up process you'll be given a detailed questionnaire asking about your gaming habits. You know: what sorts of genres you're into, how often you play, what platforms you favour, whether you're more interested in solo or team play, and what types of features you'd like to see in Sea of Thieves. That will inform Rare where to focus its energy as it shapes the mercurial online title.

"We will be looking for different kinds of people at different stages. It's not like we're just looking for one kind of gamer," said engagement manager Bobby Lamirande.

"There's no bad answer to anything," added executive producer Joe Neate. "It's just about having that variety"

Announcing the Sea of Thieves Technical Alpha

its heart, our upcoming shared world pirate game Sea of Thieves is all about you, your friends and the high seas adventures you’ll be embarking upon together. With this in mind, our ongoing approach to game design is to craft a wealth of features and systems suited to all manner of player motivations. Our intention is to get that content into players’ hands as soon as possible, giving us valuable feedback and insights into the diverse ways that people will play and experience Sea of Thieves.

As part of our commitment to pulling in player feedback throughout development, we recently launched our Sea of Thieves Insider Programme, inviting passionate fans to sign up and share their experiences and suggestions. Today, we’re excited to announce that our early Technical Alpha phase will kick off on December 16th with a series of scheduled playtests, and we’ll be inviting selected players from the Insider Programme to join us!

As with the rest of the Insider Programme, the contents of the Technical Alpha will be subject to the NDA all Insiders must agree to when signing up for the programme.

We’re powering into this phase of development with three main goals in mind:
1. We want to deliver on our promise to Insiders to help us test early game mechanics and services at a larger scale than anything we’ve delivered before.

2. We want to give our participating Insiders the opportunity to provide feedback about their experience.

3. We want to use this feedback and our data insights to make meaningful changes to our game.

Our first Technical Alpha play session will take place next weekend, from December 16th-18th. It’ll be available during several timeslots throughout the weekend, after which we’ll thank our participating pirates and give the servers a rest while we take on board everything we’ve learned, determining the best ways to apply it to Sea of Thieves’ development.

We’re overjoyed to see that thousands of eager gamers have already signed up for our Insider Programme, but the scale of the weekend’s session will be limited to around 1000 players only. This gives us the right scale and experience for our first test, and will allow us to focus closely on the feedback we receive. As we move on through the Technical Alpha phase, we’ll gradually increase the player base and frequency of sessions in line with the game’s evolution.

Ready to find out more? Watch the video to glimpse which new gameplay features will be included during this first round of the Sea of Thieves Technical Alpha. Fully convinced and ready to go? Jump in now and join our Insider Programme to be in with a chance to play – and check out our official Forums and the Sea of Thieves subreddit for all the latest news and updates!

I signed up. In response to the question 'Which gender do you identify with?' I answered 'Jedi' to really strawberry float with their heads!

I'm going to wait for the inevitable modern-day sequel. Now, I don't know much about piracy in the 21st century but I expect it would look something like this:

I wasn't allowed to fire the catapult. When we hit the other boat, we got a direct hit on one of the girls so we stopped. Good job we're all friends!

I'd put money on this being the Xbox's version of No Man's Sky. Current gameplay videos make it look so empty and dull.

No chance for various reasons, they've had beta's, held a podcast monthly since its announcement, monthly videos on how they are progressing but most crucially have not promised anything that won't be in the final game.

If it turns out to be good or bad so far Rare have been perfect in the delivery of its PR, community focused to the point that it almost feels like a kick starter. If I was a betting man I think it's gonna be a hit (in MMO circles).

I wonder how this will take advantage of scorpio as this has stylised graphics so extra horsepower isn't all that important. The base game looks pretty much as good as I'd want anyway.

Pretty sure game in all the vids is running on an Xbox One, cross play in this would keep community big so hope it has it.

Played this for nearly 3hrs tonight. Can't talk specifics but it's awesome. It's as good as the videos show basically, a chatty crew is a must tho.

EDIT - I think I understated how good this game is, put it this way, after Alpha was over I was gutted, being as this is an alpha and the net code with chat and proximity chat working seemlessy plus knowing what we could do and that it's still an alpha makes the final game seemingly game of the year material.

A grcade crew would be stunning, seriously can't under emphasise how perfect it is with a crew. Literally can't wait for the next alpha, least buggy alpha I've ever seen tbh. Sword combat in next one I believe.
