Photek et al. Have you spent enough time with the game to give us your first impressions of the release build? Is the solo mode purely for tutorial, does the main game have a structure of sorts or is open like No Man's Sky, do you think it has (sea) legs :shifty: and most importantly is it fun?

In it's present state it doesn't have legs. This is an early release and honestly I would not buy it yet. It's worth a try if you have game pass, but in my opinion the lack of tutorial hides a lack of depth or variety in the gameplay, as you spend so long working everything out.

It feels like Rare needed another year to develop but MS forced the release to kick off the game pass deal. If Rare continue to work on it, I suspect in 8 months time it may be an entirely different experience.

That's my two cents on it.

Solo and multiplayer are pretty much the same, but with four people it's much easier and more convenient to use the larger boat. There's no overall structure and it's just basically one big sandbox with not much content. No idea what sort of updates Rare have planned but it definitely needs more as I can see it getting old pretty quick.

There's not even a character creator, it just generates random character models that you can choose from.

Playing some PUBG then this, is it working?

I agree with Captain Red, I think it will evolve a lot, they said launch was really just the beginning.

I'm concerned that this is going to really cripple them. There's been lots of stories this generation of developers releasing "broken" games because they can just fix them with patches further down the line, so you'd think with all the negative press each one spews that Rare wouldn't fall into that trap. I get that it might be a Microsoft problem for forcing them to release it too early to help them launch the "first party games on gamepass" thing, but considering how long they'd been hyping it up, you'd assume it would have been a little more developed by release... :?

The impression I had is that it's kind of a Pirate version of Destiny. You travel on your ship in various joint missions. The main thing I was wondering is are they just random missions or is there also a main quest and story underpinning it all.

No character creator is a surprise with an online game because that's how people like to express their individuality. But I read that micro-transactions for cosmetic items will be coming three months after launch so maybe it's incoming then.

Had a fun time sailing the high seas on my lonesome. Only got sunk once when I was exploring an Island and a sneaky skelly starting pelting my ship with an island cannon. Don't bother filling Banana crates, only got 300 gold. Not bothered by the current content, its something I'll be dipping in and out for many months to come.

How can you be ‘not bothered’ about a supposedly finished game that’s been years in the making, yet has a desperately poor volume of content, and no campaign, and no tutorials, and no character customisation? I mean, is it monthly MS pay you, or per game, or...?

The launch content isn't great but its got such a solid foundation that I'm looking forward to what they introduce in the future. I just love sailing the seas and will play it once or twice a week. Getting Gamepass for £3 a month helps too.

I don't care one bit about no campaign, and no tutorials, and no character customisation.

Though it wasn’t made out to be a huge announcement, it was revealed that the game had passed over 1 million unique players in under 48 hours since releasing in New Zealand. At one point, Duncan even said that he was told from a service engineer that 5,000 players were joining the game per minute. This high influx of players and just the sheer amount playing during peak hours around the world have led to issues of people being unable to join matches.

In addition, Rare is also looking to fix performance issues that players have encountered on Xbox One X. Fixes will be implemented with the game’s first client-side update that’s hopefully releasing early next week.

I haven't played the game yet but I feel like I need to boot it up and post about how awesome it is to support my fellow Xbros.

The missions aren't random, they are just little quests you pick up at outposts from factions. There's no main storyline connecting everything.

I've just started the game, and was expecting no in-game tips at all, after reading this thread, but it tells you quite a bit. Someone here said that it doesn't mention that you've got two inventories, but it literally tells you to open one inventory (banana), then the other straight afterwards (map).

As for "no progression", three guilds, each with promotions, titles and commendations seems like, well, something.

Really cool game a looks gorgeous, but few things really annoying me.

- No local map, I get youre an explorer but youve no idea of your bearings at all
- No team member finder button. Randoms disapear off onto islands doing god knows what

Can see these missions getting old, increasing reputation isnt enough for me. Like a worse version of Destinys vendors.

Enjoying it though, and cancelled pre order and playing on game pass so will charge on.

I use the compass combined with a map (if you have one) along with my checking out my surroundings.

Just had a good run-in with someone. Literally.
Had just finished on a mission, riding the high seas back to base, when all of a sudden another ship comes over the wave and we have a collision. I manage to get back and sell my skull, but when I return to where I'd park my ship, I find the crew I'd collided with hijacking it and ramming it straight into the rocks.
I'm hoping I got the event on the five minutes I just asked the Xbox to record, as I forgot to do so straight away.

Had an absolute blast with 3 mates on a Galleon. Epic!

Got in a few barneys and a major one when a crew we were helping at skull Horde double crossed us. They sank us we went back and rammed them.

The game is doing my nut in, really doing it in. Stuck in a constant storm and my ship keeps sinking. Park it up near an island then notice smoke...Sunken ship oh yay.

I chose solo adventure so does that mean I won't run in to other players? Not seen a single person yet.
