If they build a third-person view in as well as the default first-person viewpoint this could fill the hole Fable's demise has left. Maybe.

I saw a lot of Twitter hype and had high hopes but the trailer was underwhelming for me. It looks like it will be great for Let's Plays and Twitch streams, but it looks like it could be an absolute chore to play.

Lengthy preview from a Rare Fan -

To say that I enjoyed playing Sea of Thieves would be a huge understatement. It is in fact the most fun I’ve had with a multiplayer experience in all my years of gaming (and I’ve got nearly three decades of experience with that!). The game’s controls are superb, its audio spot-on, and its graphics some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, and this was a pre-beta build!

IGN also have a great write up. My only concern is, we never get teams of players together here really, so hope it can match make into a crew.

I liked their showing at the conference.

At least you could see the game was being demoed by real players and not some fake, scripted gooseberry fool like that cringe worthy Division trailer last year.

I said it on the MS podcast, but reddit, 4ch*n etc. are going to ruin this game; boats of tryhard min-maxxers ganking anyone and everyone.

Is this a multiplayer team battle game or has anything been said about a single player story?

I'd like to know this too. Haven't even seen any enemies in it bar skeletons and last years trailer.

Online communities such as Reddit, 4ch*n, somethingawful etc. have reputations in online mass-multiplayer games for being predatory and deliberately disruptive; spending inordinate amounts of time figuring out the mechanics for how to be the most annoying and overpowered. They will sail around the beginner areas or whatever and go out of their way to attack newer, weaker players. Better?

I wouldn't really mind if they did that in this game, seems quite fitting if there's a feared and deadly 4ch*n pirate crew on the high seas

Poor Kudo:
We could’ve just ignored the ships though and headed for an island, which is apparently what Xbox boss Phil Spencer did when he had a go. Rare show us a video of him and other Xbox execs playing the game for the first time, back when the graphics were still ultra-basic but the gameplay was intact and working.

Unlike the noble games journalist, the natural instinct of your average video game exec is to wait until some treasure is found and then stab all their shipmates in the back. Apparently Spencer and co. didn’t know they were being filmed, and we watch as they all conspire against Kudo Tsunoda and throw him overboard after taking back their treasure from him. Unfortunately, Microsoft won’t release the footage to the public but it was fascinating to see them all, including Phil Harrison, having just as much fun with the game as we did.

Beta planned:
Structurally, the game will have quests and story elements like any other game, although you’re equally free to just sail around and do whatever you want. To be honest, and kind of story aspect doesn’t seem to have been a priority at this stage of development, and instead Rare have been concentrating on getting the core experience working and getting a beta up and running.

‘Because it’s so dependent on real players we want to get it into people’s hands as soon as possible. We want to release a beta as soon as we can, but not a one-week-before-release beta, a proper beta where we can start observing how people play, and get their feedback.’
