The Nones are a peaceful, simple race. Shite football team though.

Speaking of which, at this rate we're probably going to be made to feel as welcome at Brazil 2014 as a turd on a doormat.

On what basis do Argentina officially state their claim to the islands as it looks like from the ownership history of the island and the wishes of the population that they don't have a leg to stand on.

It's because they want the oil.

I was trying to think of a situation where the roles were reversed and all I could come up with is if Argentina owned the Isle of Man. And that the Isle of Man was occupied entirely by ethnic Argentines who spoke Spanish. But even then I can't see us doing what they're doing. I think too many Brits would enjoy being able to take a short boat ride to 'Argentina' whenever they chose.

Looks like it's only fair they give it back to None, since they appeared to have it first.

EDIT - Mr. Yoshi is a nice guy.

Typical that the Americans only get interested in what's going on in the world when oil is involved.

I'd love to see Cameron go on Tv and say "Tell you what Sean - you stick to overacting in your 'carefully chosen to display your angst and sensitivity' films and keep your strawberry floating nose out of our business!"

He'd walk the next election.

(although we will anyway! :P )

It'd be his best foreign manoeuvre since inadvertently causing a lack of public interest in aiding Pakistani flood victims, that's for sure!

Best we leave as is.

Well, for one thing, you can take the case to international arbitration, where each claimant argues its case and the courts rule on a settlement. Obviously both sides can't get everything they want, but hey, that's the nature of settling a dispute. Has happened countless times. Hec, even that 'Mad Dog' Gaddaffi has respected the International Court of Justice's (non-binding) ruling and ceded disputed territory to a rival claimant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aouzou_Strip). There are many other examples of settlements being reached, like in the Persian Gulf, for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territoria ... rsian_Gulf.

To be honest, if the UK government did engage in any kind of negotiation with Argentina the biggest protests would probably come from the Falkland Island citizens. They've made it perfectly clear that they want nothing to do with Argentina.
I believe Argentina have offered citizenship to anybody on the Falklands that wants it for a while now, and only one person out of all those people has ever taken up the offer. I think the last vote for remaining a British dependancy was something like 96% in favour.

Indeed. Effective control generally trumps historic title (assuming there are no extant treaties backing it up) and self-determination also carries a lot of weight. Bearing this in mind, however, if the UK keeps banging on about the importance of the Falklanders' right to self-determination, Westminster is going to have to be very careful in its handling of the Scottish independence issue, lest much foot shootery commence...

Oil.

Same reason why U.K doesn't want to give up.

We should let Argentina occupy Ireland, it's only fair I say.

The Spanish have no claim on England and nor do the Germans (Anglo-Saxons are the descendents of the ancient Germans). Good point with Italy though. Did Rome ever give up its claim on Britannia? If not then they could surely use the same arguments as Argentina and would probably have a stronger claim (they owned Britannia for a hell of a lot longer than the Argie did the Falklands!).
