I'm always amused by these disputes, particularly when someone suggests a mediator or some such gooseberry fool. If two countries claim an island as their's, how the hell can it be diplomatically resolved? There is no outcome where both parties get what they want.

Best we leave as is.

Yes?

Aland islands are perhaps one of the better examples. That was in the 20s though.

Yeah I always find those suggestions a bit amusing.

Argentina - "can we have the Malvina's Islands?"

Britain - "no"

Argentina - "please"

Britain - "no"

Argentina - what about we have the west island and you have the east island?"

Britain - "no"

Argentina - "then you leave us no choice, launch 1960s Russian fighter jets!!"

Well, quite. The islands are strategically significant, otherwise Argentina wouldn't want them and we therefore wouldn't be forced to defend them.

You've hardly uncovered a mastermind conspiracy there, Cal.

Well, there's that, and there's the oil too. But again it's hardly some massive state secret.

Good thread. I was going to ask people on here for the lowdown on the Falklands as my knowledge was a bit rusty. I was born abroad and only moved here when I was 12, so my knowledge of recent British history isn't as good as it could be.

God bless GRcade for making me seem more knowledgeable than I really should be to my friends.

Yeah, I actually meant the oil, but it's obviously a handy little outpost to have, too.

You can't imagine USA giving up Hawaii very easily, can you?

Surely if anything it should come down to what the inhabitants of the Falklands want. Everything I've ever read and heard suggest they want to stay with the current situation; self-governed, but protected by the UK. Don't see why Argentina don't just move on and forget about them.

Can we claim ownership of France then, as it's next door to us?

It'd be like France suddenly wanting to lay claim to the Channel Islands though, because they want a piece of the delicious butter and milk supplies. Who cares if it's against the population's wishes, and against the UK's wishes, we want it! Seems silly and pointless.
