So going by that logic the UK can retake Ireland?

By Argentina’s argument I think we can. We can claim any bit of land that is closer to us than anybody else, as long as we are bigger than the land we are claiming. After all if we could claim bigger lands, surely the Falklands could claim Argentina. ;)

Bearing this in mind, however, if the UK keeps banging on about the importance of the Falklanders' right to self-determination, Westminster is going to have to be very careful in its handling of the Scottish independence issue, lest much foot shootery commence...

To be fair I think the message is pretty standard. The UK Government want Scotland to self determine ASAP. They aren't trying to retain Scotland in the Union against the majority opinion.

as British Cornwall was here long before England, i would like to apply this logic and claim England for us.

The current occupants might not like it but apparently it's nothing to do with them.

And that the Isle of Man was occupied entirely by ethnic Argentines who spoke Spanish. But even then I can't see us doing what they're doing. I think too many Brits would enjoy being able to take a short boat ride to 'Argentina' whenever they chose.

But unlike the Isle of Man the Falklands are about 300 miles away from the coast!

i hadn't realised the Falklands were 300 miles from Argentina, always assumed they were much closer.
So i quickly read through four pages of posts to make my joke about us claiming Ireland and Europe claiming us etc, only to find all of page 4 doing the same thing...

Cornwall is only a county and therefore fully owned by England.

If Cornwall gets independence, so must the Kingdoms of Northumberland and Mercia!

It is very, very rare that I defend the British Government in its handling of our colonial past, but this is one of those occasions. Handing the Falklands to Argentina against the wishes of its people would be a huge, totally unfair betrayal of the Falklands and its people. They want to remain with us, so letting them go to appease South America and ignorant celebrities would be the most sickening action we could take.

Noted world statesman and cat impersonator George Galloway is on 10 O'Clock Live now claiming to be a friend of Sean Penn.

What an utter banana split. Seriously. Suggesting that you can't listen to the population because there's 'only' 3000 of them and they are descendants of British people. That they should be relocated despite the fact that they've lived there for generations! To make way with what? All those Argentinians on the island? Oh wait.

Having always presumed that it being this side of 1950 then we were probably in the wrong during the Falklands War, I hadn't ever given much thought to the issue until I read a bit around the war in the recent kefuffle and I'm struggling to find one argument in favour of Argentina's claim that isn't strawberry floating retarded.

Other than 'Well, there's clearly a dickload of oil near it and we want it' which is a very sensible argument in terms of resource management, but insane from a 'This land is rightfully ours because I can see it from my house' standpoint.

There are only two troubles with that standpoint.

1. The Falklands are 300 miles away from Argentina and there is no way they can see them from their houses.

2. Sarah Palin can see Russia from her house in Alaska. Don't give that crazy bitch ideas about being able to own things she can see from her house.
