Welcome to the World of Warcraft thread reborn! No doubt there are a fair few veterans that will enter this thread and use it for pimping off their latest stats, kills and gears but for this first post I thought I'd make a small FAQ for any new starts that may be tempted into the game as well as making several passing derogatory comments of a Mr.SoK aka Kaioken the Tramp, much beloved and smelly contributor to the previous thread incarnation.

With that said, Letsa go!

ImageQ: What is this World of Warcraft business all about anyway?

ImageA: World of Warcraft is a moderately entertaining Multiplayer Online game that has become rather successful due it being fun and simple to use despite it's nominal subscription fee.
You create a character on the side of a faction, Horde or Alliance and begin your adventure of questing through some entertaining and impressive storylines, slaughtering members of the opposing faction in Player Versus Player combat (PvP), advancing through difficult dungeons with in groups of 5, 10 or 25 people in search of hideous bosses and epic loot and most importantly breaking several veins in your forehead as you encounter the most terrifying enemy of all; illiteracy and stupidity found in the global chat channels.

ImageQ: Sounds interesting aside from the idiots. How would I get started in this game?

ImageA: Getting started is simple enough. Picking up a copy of WoW is easy enough to do and can also be bought online via the official site. Acquiring the expansion, The Burning Crusade, may also be advisable as otherwise you are restricted from playing 2 races and can only level to 60 out of a possible 70 but it is in no means mandatory.

ImageQ: So I've bought your game because you threatened to beat me if I didn't. What now?

ImageA: Good job, no beatings for you! After registering your account and logging into the account you'll be asked which type of server you wish to play. There are really only 2 types of server (PvP and PvE) with two derivatives (RP-PvE and RP-PvP).

In PvP realms, when you enter certain contested areas usually found around level 20 or so, you will be flagged as a PvP player meaning that any member of the opposing that you spot can be killed by you and vice versa.

This has it's pros and cons in that while it is vastly more exciting for when you encounter an enemy player, there are no restrictions on player level when killing, so a vastly higher level player is free to murder you and stand there laughing and your low level corpse.

PvE realms however do not have a system like this. Instead you can choose if you wish to flag yourself for PvP should you feel the urge. Other than this, the realm types are the exact same.

As for the derivatives with the prefix RP, that stands for Role Playing and players are allowed and encouraged to develop their own player back-story via the realms of their imagination or set-up elaborate storylines and battles via the official realm forums for mass enjoyment. This however is entirely optional but character and guild naming tends to be stricter here so refrain from calling your character "Imdawinna" unless you like universal ridicule and being contacted by one of the Game Masters (GMs) about having a name change.

ImageQ: Alright already, shut up! Let me make a character you bastard!

ImageA: With pleasure. When choosing a character you have to first decide faction, either Horde or Alliance, followed by a character class and then finally all the incidentals like physical appearance, gender and so on.

Assuming you're playing with the expansion installed, each faction has access to each of the 9 character classes but some of them will only be available to certain races because of the nature of the storyline of WoW. The 9 classes are: Mage, Warlock, Priest, Paladin, Hunter, Warrior, Rogue, Shaman and Druid. If you're playing the regular version, Shamans for Alliance and Paladins for Horde as well as the races Blood Elf and Draenei will be unavailable.

ImageQ: Wow, that's a lot of choice. Which class should I go for my first time? Help me or face strongly worded emails sent to you.

ImageA: There is no perfect class for me to recommend to you to start with: it's entirely down to personal preference from what you read of the characters descriptions. If you must have advice, it is generally accepted that Hunters and Warlocks make good starting choices since they are assisted by the pets/demons they control.

ImageQ: I'm interested in playing with the people found in this thread! Tell me which server and faction is necessary for this!

ImageA: Unfortunately GRcade does not have a specific server for the people playing and are instead spread around various servers. Feel free to ask a specific favourite member you secretly adore for their server details should you wish to play with them...online.

ImageQ: So I've chosen my class and faction and have logged in. What now? Spoon-feed me the information please.

ImageA: Adventure! Upon logging in, there are numerous in-game hints provided but really feel free to explore. Try doing the quests in the area you start in or just have a wander round the surrounding places although bear in mind to watch out for any higher level monsters that may eat you. Above all have fun!

ImageQ: One last question; Who is Kaioken?

ImageA: Kaioken is an infamous undead mage that frequented the original WoW thread. This is him here touching a dead body’s naughty places while pretending he's looting the corpse. Generally he's good for laughing at simply because he's hideously ugly and can't give directions for toffee.

Professions
These can be really split into 3 groups; Gathering professions, Crafting professions and Secondary Skill professions. You will only be able to learn 2 professions from the crafting and gathering option but all secondary skill professions will be available to your character.

ImageGathering
As the name suggests, these are professions which involve gathering a type of item which requires higher and higher skill. Gathering skills are normally collected as a complement for a crafting skill but some people take 2 gathering skills purely for selling 2 different types of items for gold. There are 3 gathering professions: Skinning, Mining and Herbalism.

ImageCrafting
These are skills which take items either found from mob loot or from gathering professions and combine them together to form a more useful item. Some crafting professions help update your own character more than they produce things to sell but others do the opposite. It's normally wise to choose a crafting profession that benefits your character lest you be wasting your money: i.e. Tailoring will be of virtually no use to a warrior as they have no need for cloth based gear.

The crafting professions available are: Tailoring, Leatherworking, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Alchemy, Engineering and Jewelcrafting.

All professions except Jewelcrafting and Enchanting have further derivations for characters at the high end of their skill level which helps to specialise more for your personal needs such as Shadoweave tailoring being highly beneficial to Warlocks.

ImageSecondary Crafting
These 3 skills offer a nice complement to your character but are in no way necessary to them. They are: First Aid, Cooking, and Fishing.

ImageAddons
The World of Warcraft user interface is freely available to be altered through a series of mod files which, when placed in your game's directory, can allow various things such as revamping the look of your action bars or providing a map detailing where quest objectives may be found.

Installing addons is easy. Simply download the addon you wish from the site to your computer, unzip the file into its own directory and then move the files to this point wherever you installed the game: World of Warcraft>Interface>Addons. Should the Addons folder not exist, simply make a new folder in Interface and name it Addons. When logging into the game next you should be able to activate the mod at the character login screen.

Websites where you may find addons to download include:
Curse-gaming
Wow-ace

[To be edited as suggestions become available]

Addons that you may find useful are:
Titan Panel
Monkey Quest

[To be edited as suggestions become available]

ImageWebsites
When playing the game you may wish to find out more about the surrounding lore of an area or person, perhaps you would like the latest information about World of Warcraft updates or a website that will help you know how best to level your professions. What follows are a list of sites that are useful:

MMO-Champion, Wowinsider - For up to date latest information about World of Warcraft and any updates coming soon.

Wowwiki - The wikipedia for World of Warcraft containing information on just about everything you ever wanted to know about a particular area, person or event. Site also contains boss strategy for instances and patch mirrors.

Lootables - Guides to levelling professions and items database.

Wowguru Calculator - Handy device for crafters that lets you know how many of each material you need to craft something in large quantities.

Wowhead, Thottbot, Allakhazam - In order of helpfulness, 3 websites which offer detailed quest advice.

Wow official forums - If you need help with your class, then check out your class section on the official WoW forum as you'll get a tonne of help on there (try not to stray from the help threads as they'll leave you bitter and twisted)

Be Imba - Grades you gear, allowing to see where you can get upgrades, whether your enchants are correct and which raiding instances you would perform well in.

Armory - Allows you to search for players and guilds online and see the gear they last logged out in as well as various other specs.

What level? At low levels I would go Skinning/Mining to get yourself a lot of money. Or take Mining/Engineering or Mining/Jewelcrafting.

Jewelcrafting can make you a hell of a lot of money at high levels, but is annoying to grind. The gear you get form Leatherworking just isn't worth the hassel.

I'd argue that you get some rather nice +hit gear from epic leatherworking recipes which are handy for if you're trying to get geared for raiding but generally you're right. If you're after a crafting profession, Alchemy perhaps? For agility elixirs and healing pots? Combine that with herbalism and you can save some money rather than buying herbs.

Go for mining and skinning then. On my server Copper Ore sells for loads for some stupid reason. I spent so much money to level jewelcrafting to 375 on my druid, because of the stupid low level ores. Copper, Bronze Bars and Thorium are so expensive.

Just wanted to say Hi Jeff
/wave

Cancelled my WoW account again, ran out of "fun" stuff to do. Raid wise was upto Mr Glaives himself, but really hated the first half of BT.

Though should you not have lots of looking to the future (WotLK), stuff in your post. Also a "Recruit-a-Friend" part where you can reap the benefits of members joining you in the epicness of WoW

I have no clue who you are, but I've been feeling the same about raiding. My guild had to fold due to all the officers leaving to find better guilds. I never really got onto TK/SSC, but raiding just seems to have lots it's appeal. I used to think it was quite fun, yet it's just so damned boring.

Oh wow, Zartan the Wonder Horse. I've been wondering what you've been up to!

Wrath of the Lich King section and Recruit a friend bit sounds like a good idea. Shall work on them post haste. The Wrath section will probably deal with generalities for the moment though since alll the specifics are changing quite constantly.

As for raiding, I've been out of the loop for all of the TBC raiding aside from 10-man content which is a bit disappointing. Perhaps the 10 man option for WotLK will stabilise guilds out a bit more.

I just started to get into the 25 man stuff myself when my guild folded. One of them said we were going too slow when we had SSC for the next week. I've made about 1.2k from the void crystals in the guild bank so far, I'll share all the money I get between Dala and me, since we set the guild up. I downed Gruuls on my birthday at least.

I've just set myself dead against raiding past what I have, i've lost the motivation. I'll just go back with hopefully a good Wrath guild and one shot everything.

I've pretty much just stopped doing instances. It takes ages to find a group, and then you'd be lucky to make it through without people leaving, and you'd be very lucky to have anyone who doesn't nab good loot, or complain at you for winning a need roll.

Raiding is quite fun, a lot of the bosses are interesting, and really require everyone to be aware of what is going on, quite unlike the old 40 mans. The problem I found, comes with Farming, I never got too upset with it in the old WoW, but it really bores me now. Thing is I have only had a couple of tries on Illidan, but the just thought of going through the rest of Black Temple again.... its just isnt worth it.

(FYI I have always raided as a healer(shaman) thus I have never had trouble getting a raiding guild)
