Aren't there about a half dozen Sonic/Mega Drive collections already? That's the last thing I want this to be.

Maybe, but I've not owned one since the GameCube days, and I'd like another on the new gen consoles.

Sega has sent out a bunch of cassette tapes to 'gaming celebrates'.

Here is a video Tech Moan made about the one he got.

There is a message that says 'Cassette tapes changed music forever. We're about to do the same with retro gaming on mobile'.

On the cassette is music for Space Harrier, Outrun, super hang on etc. No Sonic music is included. So my guess would be they're are bring a bunch of classic Sega games to mobile either from the mega drive or arcade. Hopefully the changed forever part indicates they'll add some kind of controller support to mobile phones as both Android and iOS have controller support.

It just doesn't make sense to release what looks to be a Netflix style subscription purely for mobile. I know Sega can be complete fuckups but this would be a new low even for them.

I find it hard to believe they're plugging all those consoles to work on mobile. I'm sure they'll be iOS/Android inclusion of some kind but more so for the Mega Drive era.

There's no Sonic music because it was actually all licensed from Japanese composers and they don't have a license to distribute the audio tracks by themselves, only in a game. So it may include Sonic games as well.

(Interestingly but probably a coincidence in that pick your 20 games thing for 2.75 that Bundle Stars did, there were no Sonic games either - maybe there's a minimum amount of royalties they have to actually pay out to include Sonic games in this sort of thing. Potentially also to Yuji Naka. So you'll never see a Sonic game for 10p etc)

There's actually a very good port of Soul Calibur for Dreamcast on iOS/Android so it's certainly possible to emulate the platform - it even runs at 60fps. Digital Foundry did an analysis of it. So Dreamcast games aren't much of a stretch anymore and they don't have to be awful. Especially with the decent Bluetooth controllers like 8bitdo. Sega could do a collaboration with them.

But gaming on mobile, lol I just never do it. They're probably trying to tap into a market that won't even buy a games console anymore yet alone a retro one. Executives etc. who had a Master System or MD in the late 80s/early 90s.

That's exactly how Nintendo positioned the mini NES in their TV ads and Sega have noticed this, but they don't have the manufacturing abilities of Nintendo to make new hardware. It's certainly not new hardware. This is official emulation like Sega Classics on steam.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

"Cassette tapes changed music forever."

Yes. Far more convenient, but just a little bit shitty in comparison. Is that what they're aiming for?

It'll be a lot more shitty if you're forced to use the touch screen.

The guy on that video says at the start: "As far as I know, nobody is really talking about this..."

Quite.

SEGA should be looking at the Nintendo Mini Classic and doing their own mini versions of the Master System and Mega Drive/Genesis consoles.

Pretty sure you're the first person to ever have that idea.

I hope it's a £750 hyper console.
They can have the same spec as the Xbox X just with another £300 spent on a monster CPU and better cooling.

It seems kinda okay... but it is for mobile gaming.

Eurogamer wrote:A few weeks back I went to London to hear about Sega Forever, an initiative that will see Sega releasing a load of its classic games onto mobile platforms - iOS and Android - over the course of a few years. These games will be free, and surprisingly lightly monetised. You can play them forever without paying, or you can spend a one-off fee of £1.99 to ditch the ads, which appear on the start screen, the save screen, and I think at launch, but will not interrupt play in anyway. The games are emulated or, in the case of Dreamcast titles, ported, and they'll have virtual buttons, but you can use a controller if you have one, and while each game is its own download, its own app, there are commonalities uniting them all: leaderboards, cloud saves - local saves if you pay that £1.99, although you can play the game offline for free - and, at some point after launch, multiplayer, initially over wi-fi but eventually over 3G and 4G if Sega's hopes pan out.

Eurogamer wrote:At the time of writing, the line-up has moved around a little bit, but the first five to be released with be: Altered Beast, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, Phantasy Star II, Sonic the Hedgehog. Hmm. What is the deal with Altered Beast? What power does Altered Beast have over the top people at Sega? Did it witness them pulling off a murder together? Anyway, After those five - four, if you don't count Altered Beast! - you'll get new games at the rate of one every two weeks, covering all of Sega's consoles from the SG-1000 through to the Dreamcast.

Imagine if MS had secretly bought Sega, and at E3 had announced that Scorpion was to be released as a Sega-branded console.
