 I thought I corrected that from "hedgehog the sonic".

It's not just the midi music "style" either it's the hardware synthesis in those chips was actually very good for the time and they had unique sounds not unlike real workstation synthesisers that were essential to the authenticity and atmosphere in games. Modern sound is all mostly sample based if not live recordings. When you hear that music on og hardware it is being created in realtime and "played" by the console not just played back as wav as anything else can do. They sound awesome hooked up through a good system. It is literally the same as plugging headphones into and playing a keyboard with the same sound chip as that was how digital sound was limited originally as there was no storage for PCM audio. And in that way you have very high quality sound, just "old" style sounds.

It's probably a good thing that Sega are revisiting the software as, by most accounts, AT Games' emulation system wasn't really up to spec. I'm still interested in seeing the final product although - as with other mini consoles - I'm not sure that I'd use it for long before it becomes a nice-looking ornament.

Can't wait to not play Sonic 3 at an even later date.

Kinda sad that it's a safe bet to say S3 or S&K won't be included :/

Would much prefer for Analogue to make a FPGA system that takes the original carts.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if this wasn't the next system they tackled

I don't understand why Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles always gets omitted from these collections.
Does it have some kind of weird licensing issue or something? It was in the PC Mega Drive collection I got yonks back, but every recent collection is just Sonic 1 and 2.

People: Did Michael Jackson write the music for Sonic 3?

Sega: No

People: Why hasn't Sonic 3 been released?

Sega: Michael Jackson

They didn't seem to have problems re-releasing S3&K when they were doing things like the Sonic Jam or the Mega Collection, I wonder if they were still covered by some licencing agreement at that point?

When was the last time any version of S3 was released? It's on the Mega Drive emulator thing you can buy on Steam isn't it?

That Steam version was the most recent re-release I believe aye.

It's weird as there seems to have been inconsistency in whether the music's been a problem. For instance, they changed the MJ sounding songs in the 90s Windows release and yet they've since rereleased 3&K many times seemingly without issue. Really makes you wonder what on earth resurfaced to make it a problem now and if that was the same as what caused changes in the 90s PC release

It really is bizarre, and a shame as S3&K is such a good game that deserves to be remembered alongside the other 16-bit entries.

I've actually been putting off replaying it for years because I was expecting it to get the Retro engine treatment like 1/2/CD did. Don't leave me hanging SEGA!

Ah man I know right? I don't want to go back to 4:3 for those games after the Retro Engine editions! It's tragic how badly those have been mishandled, being bogged down with ads via Sega Forever on mobile and 1-2 somehow never seeing release elsewhere...

For now, Sonic 3 Complete is a ROM hack that's easily the best way to play 3&K thanks to many fixes and customisable tweaks

I don't know if they're still on the store but the Xbox 360 arcade versions of sonic 3 and sonic & knuckles are both backwards compatible one the Xbox One and if you have both I'm pretty sure they let you play Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Not sure on the quality of the emulator but don't recall having any issues with them.
