PostSega Mega Drive named favourite retro console by Brits
by KK » Wed Jan 25, 2012 2:40 pm

Playr2.com via Cnet wrote:The Sega Mega Drive has been named the most popular retro games console, narrowly beating the Nintendo 64 in classic console combat.

Gaming site Playr2.com asked 1,411 British button-bashers aged 18 or over to name their favourite vintage videogame console. 61 per cent of those who replied named the Sega Mega Drive as their favourite.

Looks like Sonic the Hedgehog beats GoldenEye. The Mega Drive launched in Japan in late 1988, arriving in the US in the 1989 -- where it was known as the Sega Genesis -- and finally landing in Blighty in 1990. It survived in Europe until 1998, in which time 8 million Mega Drives were sold.

But gamers were allowed to choose more than one console in the new survey, and the Nintendo 64 was a very close second. The N64 was a 64-bit console launched in 1996 in Japan and early 1997 in Europe. Despite being one of the last cartridge-based consoles when its rivals were switching to CDs, it's still held in high regard by 58 per cent of gamers.

The N64 is followed closely by the Atari 2600 and original PlayStation, both winning approval from more than half of those who replied.

Nintendo won the hearts of many a gamer with the Game Boy, SNES and NES, in fifth, sixth and seventh places. The Sega Game Gear and Neo-Geo are in eighth and ninth, while the SEGA Master System rounds out the top ten with just over a quarter of the vote.

Vidyer gaming is certainly coming of age, with this year marking the 30th birthday of the Commodore 64, fondly remembered by gamers of a certain age.

I agree with that.

Sega for life.

SNES shouldn't be where it is though. The ignominy of being behind the Atari 2600 (one of the worst consoles ever made) and the Nintendo 64. The mind boggles.

I also can't understand the popularity of the Neo Geo. How many people actually owned them?

About 4 I think. But each of these 4 people had dozens of people who tolerated them because they were rich and had cool gooseberry fool like neo geos friends.

The first two are ok, then it all goes horribly wrong.

How can Game Gear be above Saturn, that is obviously factually incorrect.

No-one had a Saturn. NO-ONE. Having a Saturn made you an outcast. It doesn't deserve to be top ten solely for that reason alone!

Yet someone made a thread earlier asking which was better. PGR4 or Sega Rally?

I had a Saturn and bloody loved it! The GC and mega drive were better though!

I still to this day believe, on release the Saturn was better than the playstation. It was only the Sony marketing machine and blinded fan base that killed the superior machine off!

I dunno about that. I loved the Saturn, more than the PS. But was it a superior machine? Hmmm I dunno. 3d wise, the PS was better. Yes, the Saturn had some stunning 3d games. VF2 being the archetypal example. strawberry float, that game still stands up today. Same with Sega Rally.

But, imagine what that game would have been like if Yu Suzuki's team programmed for the PS? 3d on the Saturn was an afterthought.

No argument the Saturn pissed over the PS 2d wise though.

And the vastly superior games library, which had a size and variety that the Saturn could only dream of. It didn't help that the Saturn was a bitch to program for, having a weird architecture, or that 3D was an afterthought that was poorly implemented. Those games that managed to look good did it in spite of the hardware, not because of it.

Hold on....

They ask 1411 people and only 61% replied?

So only 860 people voted.

What a load of rubbish.

Laughable.

To be fair, the SNES is a pretty horrible looking console. Sega really nailed 80's cool with the Megadrive. I'll usually favour the SNES game library over the Megadrive's, but in terms of which console was cooler? Megadrive every time.

Though the positioning of the Neo Geo surprises me. Who the strawberry float even had one of those?

IGM had 4 apparently. He had more Neo Geo's than he had friends. Because he was rich.
