PostThe Best Wii Game Of All Time as voted for by ONM readers...

Official Nintendo Magazine wrote:Five years ago today the Wii launched in the UK alongside Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Link's brilliant adventure kicked off the Wii in style but it would be just one of many all-time classic Nintendo games that have been released over the last five years. To celebrate Wii's fifth anniversary, we asked you to vote for your best Wii games and here is the top ten.

10. Donkey Kong Country Returns

Image

We'd been begging for a new Donkey Kong platformer for years and it didn't disappoint. Donkey Kong Country Returns improved on the original with vibrant levels offering new surprises each time yet with enough nostalgic moments to keep the veteran fans happy. Those hardcore fans relished the immense difficulty level, too. We thought they didn't make them like this any more.

You say: What an absolute stunning job Retro did for DK. Classic (read: rock hard) 2D gameplay and visuals that look lush. Jumping into the background for some levels was great but the best stages are the beach sunset ones. Gorgeous to look at and outstanding to play; I've died so many times I've lost count but still I go back for more! danbish

9. Okami

Capcom's amazing adventure had already been released on PS2 by the time it reached Wii but thanks to the Remote being used as if it were your celestial brush, Okami Wii is arguably the definitive version. It stars an unlikely hero - a wolf named Amaterasu who has to lift a curse placed on the land by legendary monster Orochi. Using the celestial brush, you attack enemies and bring life back to the barren earth with an explosion of colour. When it comes to pure adventure games, only Zelda beats it on Wii.

You say: A game that found its true home on Wii. I was gripped by the story and amazed by the Japanese artwork-inspired visuals. Truly a unique game that deserves more praise. sciqueen

8. Monster Hunter Tri

Monster Hunter Tri was a huge deal for Nintendo. Until the third game in the series, Monster Hunter games had always been on PlayStation consoles so it was a massive coup for Nintendo when Capcom decided to release Tri exclusively on Wii. It was a great decision - with 35 massive beasts to slay, the single-player adventure is packed with epic battle after epic battle and working together to take out monsters online is immensely satisfying.

You say: I had only tried one Monster Hunter before on a friend's console and I was left completely clueless as to what I had to do. Tri found a way to help newbies like me while still providing enough content to keep hardened veterans from getting bored. I spent over 300 hours battling monsters just so I could get improved armour or a new weapon. One of the most enjoyable games on any console. shadow663

7. Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess

With the world swooning over Skyward Sword, it's easy to forget just how good The Legend Of Zelda Twilight Princess was when it was released in 2006. Without Wii MotionPlus swordplay, it may not have the finesse of Skyward Sword but swinging the Remote to take out enemies at the time was great. That's not to say it hasn't aged well - it's still a wonderful adventure with a dark story to tell, brilliant dungeons and, in Midna, one of the great characters.

You say: This is my top game for all of the following reasons: gameplay, graphics, storyline and the sheer size of it. First off, the storyline: it is quite possibly the best ever in a Zelda game. It was so compelling, so mysterious, so undeniably dark it just hit the spot. The visuals were stunningly beautiful, the gameplay was innovative for the Zelda series until that point and I think it took me 75 hours to (almost) fully complete the sidequests.. Still the elusive few pieces of heart to get. ZeldaKing

6. Xenoblade Chronicles

Xenoblade Chronicles was only released this summer but it has already become a huge favourite among Wii owners. Indeed we called it the best Japanese RPG for a decade on any system. Designer Tetsuya Takahashi (Final Fantasy V, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana) created a jaw-droppingly vast game world for Wii owners to play in while managing to keep gamers hooked with a fantastical story and an innovative battle system.

You say: An absolutely amazing, vast game with tons of play time, especially if you collect everything. The characters are charming and although it is a tough adventure, it features the best storyline in a game with lots of plot twists. Amazing. the fly guy

5. Mario Kart Wii

While not that many of you selected Mario Kart Wii as your favourite Wii game of all time, it was in so many of your top three Wii titles. This tells us that while games such as Xenoblade Chronicles and Skyward Sword are wonderful experiences for the solo player, it's great to take a break from the rigours of Skyloft and have a laugh playing Mario Kart Wii with three friends. With great items, brilliant courses, wonderful characters (Funky Kong, Rosalina), this is classic Mario Kart. Just don't mention the blue shell.

You say: This game has it all; brilliant characters, tons of awesome tracks, great multiplayer and it's still going strong in the Wii charts to this day. Nuff said! JamieRiot

4. Super Mario Galaxy

Nintendo reinvented the platformer all over again with Super Mario Galaxy. Having started the 3D era in style with Super Mario 64, we had wondered if Miyamoto and crew would ever create an adventure to top it. This was their answer: an astonishing game with an atmosphere all of its own. This wasn't just another 3D adventure set in the Mushroom Kingdom - by shooting Mario into space in pursuit of Peach (guess who kidnapped her?), Nintendo made something that felt totally fresh and featured enough iconic moments to make it the best Mario game ever. Until...

You say: This game was amazing, proving that you didn't need a HD console to have stunning graphics. This truly showed what the Wii was capable of and with so many memorable levels and amazing suits (Bee Mario), it is an essential title. Hodgem

3. Super Mario Galaxy 2

It took Nintendo ten years to beat Super Mario 64 with Super Mario Galaxy yet just three years later, team Miyamoto created the best Mario game ever all over again. Considering it was born out of leftover ideas from Super Mario Galaxy, it's incredible to think that it could be even better than the original. Sure Super Mario Galaxy 2 struggled to match the initial surprise of the first game (how could it?) but with Yoshi returning, along with more brilliant power-ups, more vibrant galaxies and classic tunes, this was just about superior.

You say: Not just one of the most enjoyable experiences on Wii, but probably on any console. The game is packed so full of inventiveness and charm, you'll be grinning from ear to ear throughout. Yes it's similar to the first one, but it removes any filler and throws in Yoshi. Cue platforming bliss. samus_killer

2. Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword

It's been with us for under a month but such is the impact of Skyward Sword, you had no problem selecting it as one of the top two games on Wii. We don't blame you. We said that Link's new adventure is a contender for the best Wii game ever crown in our Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword review and for good reason, too. This masterpiece tells the story of the creation of the Master Sword and, as such, is an essential game for any Zelda fan. Yet even if this is your first Zelda game, it's a great introduction to the series that's now 25 years old. Having said that, if this is your first Zelda, it would be hard to go back to slaying enemies without MotionPlus after this. The locations are breakthtaking, the characters charming and swordplay is fantastic.

You say: My number one is easily Skyward Sword. The design is beautiful and the story is one of the best in the series. The controls are amazing, and playing with Motion Plus makes me never want to go back to using a standard controller when playing a Zelda game. kiba-fang-over

1. Super Smash Bros Brawl

Image

Surprised that the number one Wii game isn't a Mario or Zelda adventure? Well this briliant brawler features both Mario and Link who star alongside other Nintendo all-stars in the fun single-player action-platformer bonus that is Subspace Emmisary that lasted around 10 hours. That's the beauty of Brawl - it's stuffed with so much content that it's no surprise it's endured for so long. That and the fact that you get to see your favourite Nintendo characters fighting in arenas based on great Nintendo games while classic Nintendo tunes play in the background. Smash Bros is a celebration of all that's great about Nintendo and with the likes of Sonic The Hedgehog and Solid Snake joining the roster for Brawl, this was the best game in the series yet and your best Wii game ever.

You say: I powered the game up the other day to learn, to my astonishment, that I had completed a total of 1000 brawls! The quality of the multiplayer in this game is truly astounding, keeping you and your mates staring at the screen for ages. The single-player mode is a great improvement over that of other Smash Bros. tiltes with the Subspace Emissary and numerous modes to complete and trophies to collect. An exceptional experience.Mkmaster

I haven't played any of them, so couldn't possibly comment...

It's like episcopalians versus anglicans, we're all worshipping the same god in the end.

I don't think it's that bad a list at all. Just needs a little shuffle. I'd certainly say they have most of the 10 best games on the Wii there. It's nice to see Xenoblade Chronicles make the list. Well deserved.

Surprised that Metroid Prime 3 isn't on the list, though.

That's the whole point of a gaming forum, everyone has an opinion.

It would be a pretty boring place if we all agreed!

I wouldn't have Mario Kart Wii anywhere near the top ten on Wii, but other than that the list is solid, but ordered incorrectly.

Nope. I've been playing it a lot this week, and too much of it is gimmicky gooseberry fool. For the entire session I played on Wednesday, I didn't actually have a regular platforming level.
