Serial - Adnan released & sentence vacated. Now all charges dropped.

Adnan came out of that episode pretty sus. My opinion has shifted quite a bit against him over the last few eps.

I haven't heard 6 yet, but number 5 seemed to be her desperately trying to make Adnan seem less guilty but failing miserably. She doesn't even have any good motive for the other dude to have done it.

In one of the first episodes she seemed to want to say that Adnan and Jess had something going on. I'm expecting her to revisit that at some point. It's not much of a motive for Jay but it needs to be looked at. The key parts seem to be the anonymous caller and the time gaps of that afternoon. Adnan and Jay are definitely hiding something extra that happened that day. Even Jay's series of events doesn't match the call log. Plus the caller was never found and it seems unlikely to have been Jay.
No idea what Jay is up to now but if she can get an interview with him then she might be able to fluster him enough to hint at something more. Also I can't wait to hear how the police justified the plea deal he got (spoilered because as far as I know it hasn't been in the podcast but is on their website).

Finally caught up over the weekend. It's totally gripping stuff. Thing is, I'm itching to research it more closely but I'm enjoying the podcast too much as it is.

I'm already dreading it ending, though - it's been a bit of a revelation to me. I've never bothered with podcasts before, is there anything else that people can recommend that are as good as this? I always assumed podcasts were just shite like Radio 1 banana splits being self-indulgent and unfunny, but this is great.

I have started to download some audiobooks (I've started lowbrow, with some Milton, Dostoevsky and Dickens :slol: ), but whether they work as well, or I like them as much, remains to be seen. So any recommendations welcome. :D

Edit: just googled the narrator, which was disappointing. I was developing a massive audio crush on her. :shifty:

A few I'd recommend...

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History Very indepth history show.

No Such Thing As A Fish Fun and entertaining show about facts from the QI elves.

The Infinite Monkey Cage Science show from BBC4 with Prof Brian Cox.

StarTalk Space/Science show with Cosmos' Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

The Geekbox TV / movie / videogame chat with ex-1up editor Ryan Scott and friends.

The Comic Conspiracy Comic book chat from makers of the Geekbox.

IGN UK Podcast Videogame chat from IGN. It's okay, but I'm still looking for a good replacement to the classic '1UP Yours' podcast back in the day.

Only Podcasts I listen to are Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, Infinite Monkey Cage, and various SModco pods, like Tell 'em Steve-Dave, SModcast and so on and so forth.

Will try that Startalk and No Such Thing as a Fish.

Another vote for Hardcore History, for something similar to Serial this 8 part documentary keeps being brought up in reviews, here's part 1 -

"The staircase" is an engrossing look at American justice with more twist's and turns than a legal best-seller. When Author Michael Peterson is arraigned for the murder of his wife Kathleen' whose body was discovered lying in a pool of blood on the stairway home. This documentary offer's a rare "behind the scene's" look at a high profile murder trial.

Outstanding, cheers for the recommendations guys.

Having tried a couple of audiobooks last night, I do think this stuff needs to be designed for the medium.

The audiobooks I tried last night were admittedly just tried public domain ones as I wasn't sure how it'd go. I was listening to the Turn of the Screw (which I have read and enjoyed) and I found it really turgid and just... not 'right'. I realise that the voice talent has a huge influence, so for example, I bet the Partridge book as read by Coogan himself would be excellent. But I'm not sure about others.

I'll start with Hardcore History - sounds good. The Staircase looks good but I'm mad for audio stuff at the moment.

Hardcore history is awesome, it can be a while between episodes though, which is undertsandable given the detail dan gives to each episode.

He also does a topical podcast called common sense. It's quite political at times, but it's still very listenable. This weeks one is about how Americas reaction to Ebola and a suggestion to tackle it properly.

I also started listening to American life, which serial is a spin off show from. Again it's very good, with some quite intresting stories on there. The only issue I have with it is the 2 week life span for older episodes on iTunes, the older ones can be streamed on their site though.

Other podcast I personaly quite like: Steve Austin show, jr's podcast, debate god podcast (mainly for amazing debates between Sam Harris or Christopher hitchins to be honest) and true murder is ok. True muder is like a late night ameatur radio show, by a journalist who interviews true crime writers and talk about high profile cases, so bundy, dahlmer, btk etc. it's not very well produced, but the content is intresting all the same.

Episode 7 out now -

Episode 7 - The Opposite of the Prosecution (33 mins), 6th November
Adnan told Sarah about a case in Virginia that had striking similarities to his own: one key witness, incriminating cell phone records, young people, drugs - and a defendant who has always maintained his innocence. Sarah called up one of the defense attorneys on that case to see if she could offer any insight into Adnan’s case, and got much more than she bargained for.

Episode 7 -

interesting episode. Good to get a educated outside opinion at the near halfway point who brought up a few new points especially on the forensics side of the investigation. They echo'd my overall opinion of don't know who did it but not enough evidence to put someone away for life plus 30 years.

Next week will be very interesting as well hopefully.

I've changed my opinion on what I think happened so many times now. Last week I was fairly sure Adnan was heavily involved, but after hearing this weeks episode I think it's entirely plausible that he had nothing to do with it.

The one thing I've been certain of throughout is that there just isn't enough evidence to have convicted a man to life plus 30. I kept expecting Sarah to present something that shows why the jury decided on guilty but there's just nothing!

Yeah hearing Deidre's enthusiasm for the case made me feel more optimistic for Adnan's innocence after the pretty damning episode 6. Next week's with Jay should be enlightening.

That car park is nowhere near as secluded as it has been made out to be. Would be pretty risky to strangle someone and move their body into the boot there.

I'd say episode 7 felt a little more like a filler episode. If you'd have combined it with last weeks' ep, I don't think anyone would have questioned it. It certainly wasn't a bad episode, but I felt it was the weakest so far.

Whenever I try to sell this show to people, I find myself having to compare it to The Wire, but I've not seen The Wire. I think it will have to be my next binge. Maybe pick up a boxset after Christmas.

If you have Sky on Demand the whole of The Wire became available this month on there.
