Maybe your boss giving you a hard time as a lesson for something that will help you in the future, kind of like how Xian treats Kurt in the kickboxer.

You never know, he might take you to the pub with him one day to get you drunk and show off your dance moves.

Yeah I know, don't think the missus would be best pleased too. But we've got savings, and I really, really can't be arsed with this smug, hypocritical banana split.

Mate, you're going about this all wrong. Most of us will be smarter and more cunning than management. What you need to do is shame HIM into quiting.

Slightly more work than quiting and putting him in his place, but more rewarding when you pull it off.

Can't believe all you people who are so adamant he shouldn't hand his notice in!
Yes, it's dangerous, but better to live with your head held high knowing you didn't put up with the guys gooseberry fool, and screwing him over royally via an hr meeting on your way out the door.
If i was in your situation, i'd either report him to his manager immediately demanding an apology, or i'd hand my notice in right there and then. People like this guy will walk all over their employees every day they have low self-esteem, and if you let it go, there's as much chance he'll just pat himself on the back as there is he'll realise the error of his ways.
Tell him to ram it- keep your pride, and your integrity, and strawberry float your job. What else are savings for?

And the other side of that argument is that you just say strawberry float it, I've had enough, quit - and three months down the line when you're unemployed or doing an even more annoying job, you're thinking, 'Man, I really pissed on my chips there.'.

Speedboats, Holidays and Strippers.

Seriously, if Sam quits then the asshat has won. You'd have to be mental to quit in this climate.

On the flip side to this, maybe Sam shouldn't have been so cocky with his retort, maybe he should have said to his supervisor that he couldn't handle the extra workload or that he didn't know how to do his workmates jobs? Then all this could have been avoided. Reap what you sow I guess?

Don't email him back. When he asks why, explain that you were too busy working to waste valuable time summarising your day.

I'm pissed off at work too.

We do regular newsletters/email updates etc. The team I'm part of write some of the technical content, with other teams doing other areas. Shockingly our grasp of ritten Inglish is baad. The technical content is sent to the media team who edit it together and produce the updates. They also circle the proposed draft back round all the tech teams so they can check the content of the each others articles.

Of course the tech teams only check the "content" is technically correct - not the wording/spelling as it's not their job. If they spot something they'll say, but they wont do an "in depth" run through checking everything (after all - what's the media team/editors doing!)

Now the latest thing has gone out to clients and a few mistakes/typos have been spotted, and the media team have wonderfully buck passed and said "Well you guys checked it!". (To which the reply came - "Yes, the content - you guys edited it!")

So there's currently a slight argument between teams about who should be checking spelling/grammar - luckily the head of the media team is foreign, so he didn't get my joke that he'd fit in well as an editor at the Grauniad. 8-)

If only he were that reasonable. Someone I know asked for a pay review, as they were getting less than another employee, despite doing the same job. His exact reply was 'if you don't like it, you know where the door is'

Knowing full well no one is going anywhere with all this talk of recession and how tough it is to find jobs.

Granted I don't know too much about this kind of thing, but wouldn't the guy with the pay issue be well within his right to go to HR and demand a meeting or at least complain?

Anyone who uses 'action' as a verb needs to be put down.

Literally.

I'd like to think i'm not so bad. Despite being given some seriously shitty shifts, working for an atrocious company with abysmal standars and management, I do my best. You try night shift in a Glasgow homeless emergency-accomodation and see how you manage.

I'm glad your standards for employees hinges on their willingness to put up with gooseberry fool and not hand in your notice. If I was really that bad, i'd have said walk out there and then.

Sometimes these things happen - employees and managers butt heads. The Manager (who's job it is to MANAGE his team), should be mature enough and experienced enough to have taken it to a private location, and dealt with the situation. That's not only his job, but, I imagine, a signifcantly major part of his job. He hasn't - he's now bullying his employee.

Regardless of what Sam could have done better, his manager is way out of line, and is behaving in a much less professional manner.
