Much like Alvin has said, a proper caveman game would be awesome. No dialogue (that we'd understand, anyway), massive open landscapes (with beautiful sky boxes) full of stuff to hunt and be hunted by, some basic weapons and crafting. Wouldn't even need a story, just make it a survival game.

9th and 10th century Britain seems to be relatively popular at the moment, and Vikings in general have good representation in media, but it's a period of history I love and would like more of. You could do some very cool things with even the obvious western rpg genre.

The latest Total War game has you covered.

Oh sweet, I gotta see about playing this

A game set around 1066 could be good. Choose whether to be Saxon, Norman or Viking (I know Norman’s are sort of Vikings but you know what I mean!) and defend or invade England against the other factions.

Conan Exiles sounds pretty close to this, dude.

Yeah I was thinking of that whilst I typed my post, but that's got the fantasy element and relatively advanced civilisation stuff that I'd want to avoid in a proper "caveman" game.

I just wouldn't want anything explained. There should just be the single goal of "pass through the mountains" and then you have to figure out a way of getting enough food, equipment, weapons and clothing to survive the long trek.

Something like that, anyway, I'm just spitballing.

Tbh, Preezy, it may be worth looking at a few vids of Conan. It is sometimes clunky and it does feature fantasy elements, but, in terms of core activities, it sounds dang close to the style of gameplay that you're after.

Far Cry Primal on the hardest difficulty is pretty much that apparently.

You'd be a part of your tribe/pack, presumably eventually leading it. Interact with other tribes and Neanderthals (trading, talking, warring), hunt big game and small, attend regional festivals, hear the stories of other peoples, become a skilled hunter/gatherer/shaman/healer etc, build stuff, paint, travel and exist within a virtually unspoiled ice age wilderness in all seasons. Survive predatory animal attacks and natural disasters, hope the migrating herds/geese etc arrive on time, hope the winter thaws soon, learn how to survive on your own, successfully procreate...

There's potential here for a relatively UI-free first or third person game, an RPG type game, a State of Decay- or even Harvest Moon-esque title. I'd prefer the former, but the others could work just as well.

How about a game set in the Münster rebellion? Dan Carlin had a Hardcore History show about it. All sorts of drama there.

World War 1, Battlefield 1 was aces but I'd love a single player only game set during it.

Imagine the set pieces; running through drum fire, going over the top, gas attacks, dogfighting with pistols and then machine guns. The battles, the people, the conditions.

Battlefield 1 was like a tech demo for a tiny part of the whole experience.
