PostSettings and time periods that you would like to see turned into a video game

I’ve been watching the Pompeii eruption on Channel 5 this week and it got me thinking what a great setting and ensuing scenario it would make for a video game (Assassins Creed 45, anyone?).

So with that in mind, are there any time periods, settings or places in time that you would like to see turned into a video game that yet hasn’t?

Has there ever been an RTS/war game set during the height of Mongolian rule? I''d like to see that.

I have a whole laundry list of ancient times and places I want to see as settings. :shifty:

The Paleolithic era, or Old Stone Age. I read Shaman by Kim Stanley Robinson and it brought this arcane time to life in a big way. I could see a large, open world survival adventure set here being very good.

Ancient Babylon had a pretty tumultuous time of it, so I'd like to see that as a setting in a game, along with surrounding cities/peoples like Elam, etc.

Would love to see the Trojan War as well. Watching the BBC's Troy: Fall of a City made it a good deal more interesting than the movie about it. A game set here could be very compelling, from either side's perspective.

The Hittite Empire, and its capital Hattusa, would also make a fascinating setting. I don't know a lot about them, but from what I remember, Hattusa fell to betrayal and infighting, so there's a gooseberry fool ton of drama there waiting to be brought to life by the right writing team. IIRC, also loads of room for dramatic license, as I'm not sure it's very well documented.

Gimme some o dat Roman conquering, too. Sulla, Pompey, Caesar etc. Lots of material to work with, battles and intrigue, all sorts of stuff going on there.

Be nice to see these times and places depicted both with their Gods in full evidence, and as historically accurate as you can get. Except the Romans, IIRC their pantheon is just a rip-off of the more interesting Greek one anyway.

That could work, they've worked natural disasters into the plot before so it could be the final chase/escape sequence after whatever precursor temple collapses which was keeping the volcano in check somehow.

I want more Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy.

9th and 10th century Britain seems to be relatively popular at the moment, and Vikings in general have good representation in media, but it's a period of history I love and would like more of. You could do some very cool things with even the obvious western rpg genre.

The English Civil War would be a pretty interesting period setting.

I'd really like to see a proper Vietnam War era game. Yeah, I know there are games like Rising Storm 2: Vietnam (it's in my Steam collection), but at the end of the day, it's just another mindless online shooter, with very little in the way of depth or context. As an area of historical reading, I've found Indochina 1945-79 to be endlessly fascinating and I'd love to see the subject given a top-notch presentation within some sort of video game setting. I guess the subject matter might be too sensitive (e.g. the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia, America's 'secret war' in Laos for almost the entire time US troops were fighting next door in Vietnam, etc) and perhaps too recent for anything more ambitious than the kind of surface treatment we see in games like RS2.

The ancient Aztec empire
Khmer ruled Cambodia
Aboriginal Australia
Polynesia

As for fictional settings I'd love to see a game based on the Mistborn books.

Imagine a God of War type game set among the multitude of peoples and pantheons of the ancient Middle East. You get to play some random chap named Yahweh... :shifty:

Did you ever play Vietcong? I enjoyed that back in the day - seem to remember it being pretty tough though.

As for me, I'd like to see a game based on the Maya. Interesting people and period. Also, more stuff from ancient China, and I think the whole 'prehistoric' era is underutilised too - dinosaurs, cavemen, etc. B.C. was quite an interesting premise, before it got canned.

And this is a bit niche, but I love the aesthetic of the Mexican Day of the Dead festival - would love to see something based around that.

70's America in Los Angles really seedy deep throat, blue door era.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

The Napoleonic Wars. Just base the game on the Sharpe books/TV show. :datass:

Grim Fandango?

I did think of that, but I seem to remember the influence being fairly limited as it was blended with other themes, and it felt like quite a dark game overall (as in colour palette, not theme).
I'm thinking of something with more psychedelic colours, a distinctive art style and colour palette, a more interactive world, maybe some kind of platformer with themed characters and levels, etc.

There was that expansion pack for the first gta, but that probably doesn't count.

Good shout, Trelliz - I had forgotten about that pack even though I do have it! - but my liitle joke was for the Doctor Who fans here in GR. Between every episode on Twitch they show a film clip montage of which part is where Ian Chesterton exclaims "London 1965!"... and it hs become a bit of a meme  .
