Right,

Someone bought a Minecraft xbox one for Mia for her bedroom. Whatever. She has been playing up to now on my xbox under my live account. When she gets the xbox in her room I expect that it will be setup with her own account.

Shes 9 so she doesnt have an email address. How can I go about setting this up so that she has her own distinct account (in order to redeem all the DLC content blah blah), without having to setup an email address and all that? Is there a way to set this up so that my xbox account is still the guardian account and I can configure all of the children safety settings and that noise?

Thx bbz

I've not read all of it, but this seems like it might have some useful details Falsey.

I think each Xbox Live account has to have an email address attached to it. I just set a quick one up for my lad on Outlook and made a note of the password, probably won't use it for anything else but it was easy enough.

The parental settings are really good though, you can tweak pretty much anything, allow only certain ratings of games to play, disable online chat etc. It's a faff to sort out but once it's done it's done, and then you can lock your own account with a password or combination of button presses which is really quick and easy.

Alright, thanks dudes. Was hoping I could avoid setting up an email but I guess I have to.

So Ill create a kids email > add that email to my family on my main account > boot up xbox and sign in with kid address > update and hope the content ownership is set properly

Yeah that should do it. Regarding content ownership, you will only have access to the games you've downloaded on your account if your profile is signed into Xbox Live or if you're playing on your 'Home Xbox'. Easiest way to work it is to set the console that most people other than you play on to be your Home Xbox, because you'll be able to play them on whatever console you like.

That is a badly worded paragraph, sorry if it's confusing.

All I wanted to do was use the "aren't all Xboxes for children" quip.

But alas, it is a Falsey thread.

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

Hello, me again.

Im following this thing and its got me scratching my head: https://www.windowscentral.com/parents-guide-xbox-one

Ive created the email account and put it as a child under my account, thats fine. Im currently updating the xbox and preparing to sign in, but this step by step says to sign into the xbox with the adult account first, then the child account and they'll get a random gamertag. That seems a bit gooseberry fool? She wants to choose her own obviously.

If I sign into the xbox with the kid account first and make the tag etc can I then still manage it as a child without having to buy two xbl subs and that gooseberry fool?

You can change a Gamertag once for free after it's given you a random one. I've no idea why it does that to start with now, it did with my lad too.

Ah ok, so do you know if I need to sign in with my account first or can I just create one and sign in with my own later?

Pretty sure you can just create it without signing yourself in, although if you want to set up all the family stuff (ie sharing your games etc) you'll need to access your account. Honestly it's been a little while since I set mine up.

I think the assigning people a random gamertag is probably to get people set up and playing games quickly. It's probably a bit of a nightmare trying to find a unique username these days (it took me probably 30-60 minutes back in 2005 even)

I imagine a lot of people don't actually care what their username is either as I see a lot of people online with the generic randomly generated ones, and as MHTL says, you get a free one time change for the first time if you do want something more specific.

Thanks again for the help. I think its all setup now and as secure as I can make it..? Using the pass-thru I have her fire stick set up and it seems to all work and be slick enough. Really like the new console as well, very smooth little thing.

As for the gamertag she ran it through the random generator that is a 9 year old brain and came out with KawaiiKittyCake

I have no idea if the content is all shared - if I sign in with mine its all there but on hers it obviously isnt. Might just stick with disc copies for ease of use, lol.

Yeah, if you want other profiles to be able to access your content you'll need to set that console as 'my home Xbox', it's in account settings somewhere.
