PostSetting up a direct cable LAN between two Windows 7 machines

I havnt set up a LAN in about 6 years and the last time I did so was between two pcs running Windows XP. I used to do it directly with a crossover cable and after what seemed like half a day of strawberry floating around you'd normally have half an hour left at the end of the night to play a game :fp:

Anyway, my mate will be bringing his laptop over soon and we're going to attempt to play on a LAN using the same cable I used before (as I know it works).

Both machines will be running Windows 7, both will be running the game on steam and it does support LAN.

So, will this work or is it still a strawberry floating headache like it used to be on XP? I dont have a router before anyone says to use one.

It's easier if you just use a router instead of directly connected the two computers together.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Cant you just use an ethernet cable and link the two machines on their own lan?

Ive forgotten what the cable is called but I have one that I made on my desk. I think it begins with an s or a c.

I just read your post and I see that you were already doing that. So just man up and do it again.

I just remember the direct crossover connection being a right banana split to get going, having to change workgroups, turn on the machines in a certain order etc.

On w7 just make sure they are on the same workgroup and enable sharing.

Piss easy.

Should we shut all firewalls and the like down too?

You should need to, not going machine to machine.

For anyone whos interested, this eventually worked.

Yes we had to strawberry float around with firewalls for a bit and the network assistant was a bit gooseberry fool but only took about 20 mins to get working in the end, which is a minor miracle considering the problems we used to have with XP.
