I would take the opposite view in that "I'm embarrassed by the blowback from these publisher-kissing gamers and I find it ridiculous". I suspect we won't agree on this :) .

I'm in work so don't know how to start with this. Just because I'm not bothered by loot boxes does not mean I love publishers.....that's a big leap man. strawberry floating huge.

I just followed your style of response, dude - just because I am bothered by loot boxes doesn't mean that I am "entitled" or causing folk embarassment. But, hey, it doesn't matter  .

How exactly is complaining about exploitative and completely unregulater pseudo-gambling in full-priced games "entitled"? A lack of firm response in the first place has led to where we are now as more and more piss-taking systems have been added over the last year.

I'm glad you have the supreme and unassailable position of being absolutely 100% immune to such petty mortal issues. Does this make me "entitled"? Better that than a hand-waving corporate apologist.

I'll most likely get AC over this though.

Gears 4 rotates 2 new maps each month so you'll never be able to play the whole 24 unless you've been a nugget and bought them all at the silly price per map.

Even then you can’t play them in matchmaking, just private matches.

Jesus man are you blind? There's no problem with loot boxes. I've been playing a ton of Dirty Bomb lately and it's entire economy is loot box based. It's a free to play game which is strawberry floating awesome, so supporting them with a few dollars on a lootbox is whatever. Killing Floor 2 is a 20 euro game with lootboxes and I love it, it's support and free DLC is so great I'll gladly buy a few crates or whatever to support them.

The problem with SoW is not only that it costs 70 euro AND has microtransactions, it's that the game is designed with gooseberry fool the developers KNOW is a chore, a grind, a slog, in order to sell you lootbox to skip the strawberry floating content they put in the damn game. They've literally put gooseberry fool in the game to waste your time so you'll pay them to skip it. That's the problem, not lootboxes themselves. Christ.

It’s not a problem though
From the Eurogamer Review:
Speaking of difficulty levels, it would be impossible to review Shadow of War without addressing the inclusion of loot boxes and microtransactions that caused such a stir just a couple of months ago. In essence, loot chests can be bought from the game's market using Mirian, an abundant (and free) in-game currency, or gold - which is given out in much smaller measures and can, crucially, be bought with real money. These chests give out gear, XP boosts, new followers and training orders (essentially follower upgrades) for you to put to use, improving your fortunes as you go about the game world. Given how freely the game gives you skill points, gear and orcs to turn into loyal soldiers, however, these chests are wholly unnecessary. If you need them in order to get by in Shadow of War, in fact, you are almost certainly playing on the wrong difficulty setting.

IGN Review:
On that note, a quick word about the controversial microtransactions: you can and totally should ignore them completely. Buying loot boxes is just a way to get loot that isn’t killing uruks, which is the best thing about Shadow of War. It’s especially bizarre that these exist because so much of the allure of Shadow of War is that its enemies basically are loot boxes to begin with. So in buying them, you’d basically be paying to avoid scratching off the metaphorical lottery ticket that is an uruk’s head to reveal the loot you’re about to acquire. On top of that, I’ve had more than enough of the in-game silver currency to buy whatever I’ve needed in terms of upgrades (it’s used to enhance gear or unlock slots captain slots for sieges and defenses), so there’s been no need or even desire to spend a dime.

At least they haven't been paying YouTubers to give the game good reviews on the sly like the did the last game.

I'm probably about an hour in so far and am enjoying it. I'm a bit disappointed by the fact that it doesn't seem to be a true open world. Each city has a little bit of open area but it's not a genuine open world. The only way I seem to be able to get between the cities is by fast travelling.

One of the best things about the first game was being able to sneak into an encampment, hit and run, etc. Now you can still sort of do that but it's encampments within what's already an massive enemy base.

Anyway, all the menus are plastered in the loot box nonsense in typical WB style - basically looks like the menus in Arkham Knight, trying to flog you season passes, etc. Apart from that, though there's no real evidence of it while playing.

Looks brilliant in some places:

But less brilliant in others. Some of the cities have huge numbers of NPCs around, which is probably why.

There's also an option to prioritise Resolution or Quality on PS4 Pro. Not entirely sure what the difference is but I saw some pretty ropey pop-in in one of the busier bits.

:o . You got your copy pretty early, Harry!

Perhaps the options allow for preference of resolution (up to 4K?) or frame-rate (up to 60 FPS)?

Yeah, SimplyGames despatched it early, as usual. I haven't got much time to play it before it's actually out but thought I would at least make a start on it.

Framerate almost certainly doesn't go upwards of 30fps regardless of the mode but in one of the set pieces with loads of NPCs I noticed some pretty dodgy pop in when set to prioritise resolution:

I haven't managed to get it to do that in the general free roaming missions, though.
