I've thought about this some more and it might also be a new solution to the preowned "problem"; sure people might buy this second hand and therefore not give any money to WB, but the real money stuff gets them some moolah in a roundabout way. This way they can court retailers too.

I was super excited for this and had it pre-ordered at a decent price from Amazon (£37) but I've just cancelled and it's now relegated to a Boomerang rental.

After a surprise hit this is a lesson in how to strawberry float up a sequel :lol:

I couldn't really care less, the nemesis system is massively overhyped and added nothing to the game for me. I found it annoying that the strawberry floaters didn't die permantly.

Shelob was the giant spider right? I don't recall anything in the books indicating that she's anything else than a giant spider.

The only similarity is that she's a she. I don't mind their taking LotR and expanding what it was originally, primarily because it isn't canon, but the excuse they've used to justify it is laughable. Why not just go with She's one of the oldest inhabitants of Middle-earth and so it made sense to include her. Why is she a woman? No real convoluted, bullshit reason. We just thought it was kinda cool whilst also thinking it would appeal to those who we think will primarily play our game.

When I first read LoTR and Gollum was say "she will help us precious", I assumed he was leading Frodo and Sam to some powerful witch that he was friendly with.

Maybe WB stopped reading at that point...

It's a very odd move and I agree with Taf, there is no reason to do it other than tits. Which still isn't a great reason, they could always add in a massive titted female enemy and also keep the giant spider.

The change in lore isn't much of an issue though, SoM wasn't very faithful to the canon and was a fun game. SoW sounds like it is just going to be lootboxes, tits and bullshit.

She definitely isnt a semi-sexy woman, but shes an old spirit on the level of Balrogs and Wizards who has chosen to take the form of a bad bastard arachnid. If its not in the primary text it is for sure in the apendices.

The Eurogamer article states that her sire was this, a spirit who chose the form of a big ass spider, but it seems to be unclear...

What the strawberry float am I writing. It's a shitty decision based on ambiguity in the books and is completely out of keeping with the setting.

I didnt like the lame elf ghost gooseberry fool from the first game, but this spirit woman wank does fit right along with that.

Deffo not going to get into a debate about what is and isn't "fitting" in a Tolkein game, but having a spider transform into a lady in a cocktail dress is probably not in keeping with the vision he (and Peter Jackson) had.

I dont think its fitting with Tolkien either, but neither was the ghost elf/man hybrid from the last game - is what Im saying. Basically, its all shite, but it was ignored last time.
