Shannon mother accused of kidnap

The mother of Shannon Matthews, the girl who went missing for several weeks earlier this year, has been charged with her kidnap and false imprisonment.

The new charges were revealed as Karen Matthews appeared at Leeds Crown Court.

The 32-year-old, of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, denies those charges and an earlier charge of perverting the course of justice.

Michael Donovan, 40, also from Dewsbury, pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnap and false imprisonment.

The uncle of Mrs Matthews' former partner, Craig Meehan, also now faces a charge of perverting the course of justice, which he denies.

Mrs Matthews did not enter a plea on child neglect charges.

Remanded in custody

Nine-year-old Shannon was found on 14 March, 24 days after she went missing following a school swimming trip.

The schoolgirl was found in Batley Carr, less than a mile from her Dewsbury Moor home.

Reading out the details of the kidnap charge to Mrs Matthews and Mr Donovan, the court clerk said: "On the 19th day of February, 2008, you unlawfully and by force or fraud took or carried away Shannon Matthews against her will."

The false imprisonment charge was read to them as: "Between the 18th day of February 2008 and the 15th day of March 2008 you unlawfully and injuriously imprisoned and detained Shannon Matthews against her will."

The charge of perverting the course of justice said the accused "did a series of acts which had a tendency to pervert the course of public justice and that you reported to the West Yorkshire Police that Shannon Matthews was a missing person when you knew where she was and you were keeping her from being found".

Both were remanded in custody until their trial on 11 November.

Interesting, if inevitable. I still shudder when I recall the milling Mob of pasty-faced, football-beshirted overweights filling the streets of those dreary Northern towns looking for a paedo to lynch... now it all seems just so tawdry and undignified.

I note there's absolutely no suggestion of a sexual motive, to date.

Funny how things turn out, innit?

Have they admitted why they did it yet? Was it to cash-in on the Mccann's case? At the time it happened I said that the mother probably did it in order to scam the public out of money after seeing how much money the Mccanns raised/made. People told me not to be so stupid.

I'd guess she was probably in it for the money, yeah.

And there's the fact that Shannon Matthews' stepdad is a paedophile, as well.

I remember most of us on GR knew exactly what was going on. We weren't fooled. Neither were certain sectors of the press, in all honesty.

It's all a little bit farcical really. How on earth did she think she'd have gotten away with it?

Except for the Channel 4 documentary team, who ended up with the biggest egg on their faces ever.

They followed the Matthews family around for a couple of weeks in a fly-on-the-wall stylee.

Didn't. Suspect. A. Thing.

The mum was arrested a few days after the programme went out. :D

I tell you what, the show really revealed how the other half live. I'm so glad I'm here in my cosy middle-class bubble. Jesus.

Is there really any need to attack people's lifestyle choices like this? Does it really make you shudder? I must say, my lip curls at the thought of you putting your wrinkly old cock up someone's arse.

Shads, are you by any chance becoming worried about your weight, complexion and fashion-sense? ;)

Would have been interesting if sky news did the sequel. I'd pay to watch it.

Reckon it's all Strangers on a Train and Maddie's parents kidnapped Shannon and Shannon's parents did over Maddy?

Wait, Shannon's parents couldn't afford a trip abroad.

Fairly sure not having their child is "punishment" enough.
