I'm really enjoying this. Sure some of it is clunky, but it is a very unique experience. The game it reminds me of most (somewhat suprisingly), are the non dungeon crawling elements of Persona 4. I have not seen anyone else make this association. Does anyone else feel the same?

Finished Shen 1! Gonna wait until more patches come in before starting 2. God it's equally hilarious + maddening how emotionally distant Ryo is, the dopey ol' plank of wood

Nah that's a very apt comparison, the time management + intimacy of a small quiet town definitely links across. Inaba seems to have more polite locals on the whole than Dobuita though...

Pfft, bet they don't have construction vehicle racing of any kind, the weirdos

I would like to see Kanji face off against the comical bullies in Shenmue though

I trust you all found the three flashbacks at the start of the game? Thankfully i remembered the exact spots where they are triggered...

Also, back in the day, i found this in the Dreamcast original and am pleased to see it still present in the new version, at the time i even took a pic, sent it to Gamesmaster Mag (i think it was GM anyways) and they printed it so yay.

Been playing through the first game for most of the weekend and whilst I'm enjoying it, the game is certainly a product of its time. With clunky controls and questionable mechanics, some awful voice acting (Ryo is so wooden), yet bizarrely all these things adds a certain charm to the game.
Overall this is a really interesting down video game past.

Finally got to spend some time with this and I love it. I'm not sure how much they touched up the graphics but it still looks great to me.

I'm surprised this hasn't proven more popular now with the lack of guidance the player is given.

The graphics are pretty much the same, only sharper thanks to HD upscaling and the switch to 16:9 ratio.

When it first came out, Shenmue had the best graphics anyone had ever seen.

Shenmue Dynamic Theme (PS4) is up and it's free.

Makes you wonder how much closer to profitability this brings the series for Sega :p

In fairness, Shenmue 2 had particularly low sales on DC simply because it was such a bloody nightmare to get hold of a copy.

In early 2001 when Sega announced the discontinuation of the console, all the major stores (except my nearest Electronics Boutique/Game which was 25 miles from where i was living) removed their DC game shelves (before that i bought shenmue 1 from woolworths) and replaced them with budget PS1 games. Just getting hold of new release DC titles from then on was a major challenge (i didn't have internet at that time so online shopping was out), and i had a terrible time tracking down Skies of Arcadia & Sonic Adventure 2. Because Shenmue 2 was effectively the last major release therefore, i pre-ordered a copy from EB, and when i went to pick it up, it turned out it was one of only 3 copies delivered to the store.

So yeah, it sold poorly because no bugger could get hold of it.

Still, while were on the subject, i still have my DC Shenmue games, the second in particular is in mint condition and is in a quiet, safe spot at the back of my glass cabinet.

The US didn’t even get the Dreamcast version, they had to import from Europe or get the Xbox version.

Yep, only Japan and europe got the DC release, and UK gamers had to wait for xbox just to get english voice actors as the DC game was in Japanese with subtitles.

That's why for me, Shenmue 2 is something of a novelty on PS4 as it's the first time i've played with english voices.
