By the standards of this show that was actually a good episode up until the ending which made me roll my eyes.

Haven't seen it yet but both these statements could very well be true.

Better than last weeks but still overall fairly poor - probably feels more so due to the miss oppertunity. It's a real shame as there's some good scenes, and great acting - but there'sjust too much nonsense and overblowness padding.

It just needs any sense of grounding. Tonight mystery could have been really engaging - but as it was I was disengaged every two minutes by bits I hated

Also too much "conincidences" presented as cleverness, and an underlying "look how clever we are - you didn't guess" style to the story telling when the viewer has certain facts held back from them.

The ridiculous Hudson in a sports car (that Mycroft gets off speeding)

The magic memory drug bollocks.

Molly gets told she's need an ambulance for Sherlock 2 weeks ago - and doesn't do anthing or alert people in the meantime?

Sherlock might be walking with someone - even the super government agents spying on him can't tell.
Oh wait he wasn't - the government even says so now. Gosh he's off he rails.
Surprise! He was! Silly government.

Why did Sherlock put a bug 3 weeks ago in John's cane? Oh he predicted he'd need it - but he already said he didn't expect the fluff with the daughter...and how long is the battery/tape if it's been going for 3 weeks?

Oh he's built a network of secret tunnels in his hosptial. I mean they had the answer with keys (Hello Saville analogue) but that's much more interesting/belieable.

Wow the Nurse was willing to switch needed drugs for Saline because he's a fan of the dopped up smack head? Hope she doesn't need that job.

Like how they pointed out that's it was "entrapment" but then breezed past it with a "oh well he likes confessing"

Toby Jones scenes varied wildly from uncomfortable well acted overtones to hammy overacted "yeah why has no one arrested this guy yet...all this press is here!".

John got forgiveness FROM HIMSELF. That's the whole point. He's literally telling himself "You had an emotional affair oh well wifey loves you". It's a nice realisation but it's presented as "Mary" letting him off so we the viewer forgive the character.

I didn't quite understand the importances of the card covering Sheridan 2pm in Mycroft's diary?

We better get an explanation of how Sis knew John had said brother...

So Culverton gave Sis the paper (for some reason) and she took it to Sherlock (for some reason) so he'd go after Culverton (for some reason) and Culverton could/would kill him (for some reason...even though the entire point Culverton makes he doesn't care who he kills - he just likes killing..almost as much as he likes confessing to people who remember it turns out). I wonder if that'll be covered next week;;;

I actually thought (given the talk about serial killers) and why Culverton confesses toi people that Sherlock would talk him into confessing publically - remember the first episode with the cabby? Tense as hell...that would have been an interesting and much better conclusion rather than magic overblown foresight.

First 30 minutes - "oh come on"
Next 40 minutes - "this is actually interesting shame about the start"
Next 10 minutes - "they flubbed the landing"
Last 5 minutes - "Oh no they didn't!" (not in a shocked engaged way, but more a scornful tone)

I thought that was excellent.

Not so keen on the Mary tape and the whole "save John" crap. Why would she even make that video?

Edit: plus Sherlock's plan relied on John turning up to save him at that exact minute. Any earlier or later and the plan fails, so not a great plan.
but other than that it was really good, especially that ending!

I've had my problems with Sherlock since the second series (the first series I thought was good, not amazing) and I hated both the Christmas special and last week's episode. I thought last night's was fantastic though, mostly thanks to Toby Jones, who was intensely creepy. Evoking Savile could have been in bad taste but it worked well here. Moffat's relatively focused script helped no end too.

It was saline in the bag, not anything that would have killed him at that dosage (I think). He probably wasn't counting on being suffocated though, which is a bit of an oversight.

Moffat's desire to make everything so ridiculous and convoluted make Doctor Who unwatchable at times, it's no real surprise that it's leaked into Sherlock too...

Sherringford. Sherringford Holmes was what Conan Doyle was originally going to call Sherlock. It's since been used by other writers as the name of a third Holmes brother.
