Additional Details

An original adaptation of James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him. When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, its English pilot, John Blackthorne, comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s own enemies — the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants. Toranaga’s and Blackthorne’s fates become inextricably tied to their translator, Toda Mariko, a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape, Mariko must reconcile her newfound companionship with Blackthorne, her commitment to the faith that saved her and her duty to her late father.

Just finished the book, it was very good. Very long. Bit of a damp squib ending.

For some reason I thought this was on AppleTV which I don't have access to so thought I'd miss out on this! Will definitely try and catch this as reviews have been good!

I remember the 1980s version with Richard Chamberlain.

This should be catnip for me but there's something not quite working for me in the trailers - maybe because it's based in Japan but doesn't come from Japan. Wasn't interested in Ghosts of Tshushima for that reason but devour every Yakuza game there is. That being said, reviews are emphatic so have to try it out.

Same, loved it when I was a nipper. Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune!

This could be really good.

I have been a Fan of Sanada since Twilight Samurai. I need to watch that again.

It was excellent to be fair but that was 40 years ago.
I've got the boxset somewhere.

Fell asleep after half an hour. Maybe I was just tired, but I thought it was a bit dull.

Watched the first episode, and there's a couple of bits I'm pretty confused about.

People keep asking if they can speak Portuguese, or translate from/to Portuguese, but they then proceed to speak in English. Is the spoken English in the show just supposed to all be Portuguese? If so, why have the Japanese language elements in Japanese with subtitles, and not have the Portuguese language stuff be the same way?

Also, towards the end of the episode, the Pilot we follow through the episode is at the cliffs with the fief lord when the lord slips into the sea while trying to rescue the Spaniard. He's about to commit seppuku, which the Pilot is clearly shocked by, and he then looks awestruck by this afterwards, and bows to this "savage" he currently hates. He then talks to the Spaniard about it like he's very impressed by this determination to die by his own hand, but at the start of the episode, he calls the captain of his own ship taking his own life the coward's way out. It feels like a weird bit of character inconsistency that stands out. It's clearly meant to be an important part of the episode, but it felt a bit off when watching it.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed it, and the way it's shot looks great, even if it feels like it's giving me motion sickness at times.

Yes, the English in the show is translated for our benefit and the characters are speaking Portuguese. I assume that they didn't have them actually speaking Portuguese in these segments because otherwise the whole show would be subtitled for English-speaking audiences which might limit the appeal, Blackthorne is pretty much the only character who can speak English so it is very rarely used.

I think, in the book, the respect that the Lord earns from Blackthorn is more that he rose to Blackthorn's challenge and did the dirty work despite the danger. I think he is shocked, and not meant to be impressed by the "he was going to kill himself instead of drown", more that in the heat of the moment when panic would have set in for anyone, the lord calmly decides to end it. It's something Blackthorn has never seen and asks about it more curiously.

Up to the end of Episode 2. I have read the book but I'm really enjoying seeing it dramatised with all the lovely scenery.
