Why do they do this? Seriously, I have never really understood it in this day and age.

Why close your shop when people who do a 9-5 shift just finish work?

I know a a few shops will now stay open until 8/10 or whatever, but I'm mainly talking about shops on the high street.

It's something that really confuses me, surely it would make alot for sense for high street shops to stay open unitl 8 or even 10?

I was thinking something similar today actually! Had to go to the Post Office to change my Euros back to real money in one town and then go to the bank in another town to put the money back into my account.

You wouldn't think that was too bad until you realise that both the Post Office and the bank close at 12 midday!

I mean WTF is up with that!? It's a Saturday! Some people's only day to go out to sort things may well be a Saturday! It's like we're livin' in the Stone Age!

Remember when virtually all shops used to be closed on Sunday?

Maybe because not all shops have the money to spend on the staff required to open all day long. Why do you expect shops to be open at frankly ridiculous times as they are open all week is that not enough?

I wish they still did as it made Sunday kind of special and not just for the religious sort. It was nice to feel that most people were having the day off and had time to have some down time.

Crisp - why wouldn't they have the money to spend on staff? I reckon they would make more money staying open and paying staff til then, than they would on closing at 5 30.

Doug - I'm a student, it doesn't matter for me, but I know people who do work 9-5 who wish high street shops were open longer.

My opinion is that shops should open up until 6 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Until 8 on Thursday and Friday and should be closed on Sunday.

All shops should be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing and New Years Day. Shops open on Boxing Day especially really strawberry floats me off!

The problem is that if a shop stays open later not only will they have to have staff on for longer they will most likely have to hire more staff as most staff are on max hours anyway and you can't force overtime on people (I refuse to do any overtime at any time unless someone is dieing or dead for instance). It really does cost a lot in terms of staff and all the other costs associated with opening a store. You would also be surprised at just how few people go into shops late at night as my store opens late at Christmas and we almost wonder why we bother.

It costs more money to employ people on weekends because people would rather work on weekdays, that's why they don't have long opening hours.

I think shops make enough money with their current structure to be honest, it'd be too hard to implement, shops couldn't force their employees to work extra hours so some would end up under staffed.

I used to work in a shopping centre that opened to 8 on Thursdays to accommodate people working 9-5, we didn't really do enough business to justify it, but the centre forced all the shops to have the same opening hours.

If I had to work until 8 every day, I wouldn't be employed. It's strawberry floating bad enough finished at 6.

Am I the only one who finds shops shutting at 4 an extreme inconvenience on a sunday. What if you dont have Saturdays off work and can only get there on a Sunday, especially with cheap bus fares?

On another note, why do buses stop at 5pm on a sunday when I got a train from London to home at 11:45 at night last sunday

Totally agree with this. I hated the 24/7 culture of retail when i worked in it for a bit, always hating any customers who come in on a Sunday. Thoughts that went through my head every time went something like; "WHY! GO AWAY AND LETS ALL HAVE THIS DAY OFF! DO YOU REALLY ENJOY WALKING AROUND A BLOODY SUPERMARKET ON A SUNDAY!" etc.

Now that i work a 9-5pm though i can definitely see the logic in extending the hours at certain times though.

Yes, I am of this opinion because I work in retail. The worst is that I HAVE to work boxing day. As a result I have a proper hatred for all customers that come in on this day!

Why?

Shops should be open everyday of the year!

Anyway, shop opening hours are better here in the UK than just about anywhere else in the world.

I worked Christmas day and boxing day last year; and got paid 3x and 2.5x respectively for the two easiest days of the year. What's not to like? Earned £250 from those 16 hours alone  . And that's multiplied from the minimum wage (for 21 year olds) too.

It's good if you are getting the money for it I suppose. For me as a salesman, I do get commission but it isn't any more than I would make on a normal christmas holiday day.

Everything everywhere should be open 24/7. The word 'day' shouldn't mean during the hours of daylight any longer. How else are we to progress faster than the aliens? If we don't do this, they will come and attack us before we have developed the society/technology capable of fending them off.
