If the popularity of the Premier League continues in the US, I think playing matches over there within the next decade is highly likely.

This seems more like Jacksonville just permanently moving to London though, like when Milton Keynes wanted a football league team, rather than invest in MK City they just moved Wimbledon.

Also, does it continue to be the National Football League if you've got a permanent team based on another continent?

But it has so many toilets.
Those alone are worth a few hundred million.
I remember going to see Luton Town in the EFL Trophy a few years ago and we left just before half time to get a beer and the service was so terrible we managed to miss the first 5 mins of the second half. Yes, the Luton half was at max capacity but considering the other half was well over half empty they should have been able to manage.

Was that when they lost to Wrexham?

great night :)

I just looked and it was a lot longer ago than I thought :shifty: .
It was the 08/09 season and we beat Scunthorpe 3-2.

American sports have a history of franchises moving, it would be a lot less controversial than MK Dons over here. The Oakland Raiders are in the process of moving to Las Vegas in the next few years for example.

Mindblowing that they'd just move country though, what happens to the fanbase when this happens?

Have to say NFL's becoming really popular with youngsters this past few years, even my old University has a team, driving past on a Sunday morning is beginning to look like a high school movie with teens walking around with American football helmets.

This NFL plan has been in the offing for over a decade, looks like somethings finally happening.

We should demand that the UK hosts the Super Bowl every other year and in return they can host 1 first round FA cup tie every year of our choosing.
Seems fair.

I played Flag Football when I was younger - I think we were one of the very first schools to take part in it in the 90s. We came 3rd. I've got a bronze medal somewhere. My only sporting claim to fame.

Makes no sense + selling off to the highest bidder = yes will probably happen.

Can't they sell it but put a clause in so England home games / FA CUP etc are still played there?

It sounds like a stupid idea to me, but then I don't like American Football.

Selfishly I'm concerned at how this will impact the new spurs stadium. Yes we clearly have a ten year deal with the nfl, I just hope that the plan wasn't reliant on further nfl games or a franchise deal of some sort. Obviously though the retractable pitch wasn't just about the nfl, it will also be used for multiple other events so won't exactly be a white elephant if the nfl stops using it.

From an England point of view I don't think we need a national stadium. We have a lot of decent grounds that we can use and I don't think we need to bother building one elsewhere.

If we do insist on building a replacement then Birmingham. Is a good suggestion.

My assumption is that if we didn't have such high debts repayments for Wembley then a national stadium is a decent source of income for the FA. So a more reasonable stadium somewhere else could be a good investment.

Anyone know how much debt the fa still have over Wembley?

The article says the debt will be paid off by 2024. I'm not sure if Chelsea being a tenant while Stamford Bridge is being redeveloped will make any difference to that date.

I don't think it's a good idea. The FA will have taken the strategic risk of redeveloping Wembley but won't reap the long term benefits of having done so. Doesn't seem like a great plan.

Yeah the more I read about it the more selling it off makes no sense. I thought from what I had heard the debt was higher and the fa were really struggling with it but it doesn’t appear to be that much of a problem.

I think they clearly made mistakes with the stadium and spent far too much money on it. I can only imagine how much it would cost if they were building it now, I would expect £2bn at least.

Very confused by this. £600m for the stadium, the FA get to keep club Wembley (not sure how that works) and can use the stadium when out of nfl season and keep all ticket revenue. So it won’t effect any of the cup finals and a lot of the England national games. Seems almost too good to be true in some ways.

Government spokesman:

This is a decision for the Football Association, but Wembley is the historic home of English football and holds a very special place in the hearts of fans up and down the country. I'm sure the FA will want to strongly consider the views of these supporters before deciding what to do next.

Sweet FA.

If Khan only wants to so the Jags have somewhere to play when he moves them over (its worth pointing out he has denied that is the plan but its also worth pointing out noone believes him) then he wont care what its used for the other 7 months of the year. Letting the English team play there all they want and hopsting the FA cup is good PR for him and the London Jaguars.

I hope they don't sell for a couple of reasons.

1) The FA claim that the money from the sale would allow the FA to "make a major investment into football at grassroots level". This is disingenuous bullshit, they have hundreds of millions of pounds already that they could be using to invest, but they aren't interested. All they are interested in is flogging the EPL rights to the highest bidders. The knock on effect of this is that developing our own talent has become an afterthought because there are ready made replacements around the world that can be bought with all the viewing money the club's receive.

2) I don't want the NFL getting a foothold over here.
