Fellow GRcadians! Lend me your ears!

You may have noticed that Christmas is fast approaching; time for giving, time for bringing a little bit of joy into people’s lives, so what better time to see what great levels of generosity we, collectively as a forum can achieve if we all band together?

Some of you may be aware of Child's Play: The Gamer’s Charity, they’re a worldwide charity that specialises in bringing a little happiness (via videogames, DVDs and toys) to kids who’re having a really hard time, their UK arm is currently asking for donations of games and stuff for tragically ill kids at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

FAQ

Mr. Shadow, why Child's Play? Why not one of those better known charities like Children in Need?

The reason I choose Child's Play is because of the very real way in which you get to choose specifically what you donate. With something like Comic Relief or Children in Need, they both raise loads of money, but when you give a fiver or whatever you never know quite where it’s gone, who benefited from it and what it was spent on. With Childs Play we get to choose exactly what we want to give.

So what will we give, Mr. Shadow?

Well Jimmy, if you take a look at this link you can see exactly what it is they’re after, there’s all sorts on there; DVDs, games, toys and with each there’s a number of them that they’d like and then the number that have already been donated. So I’m going to propose we go for the big fish, the coup de grâce so to speak, let’s see if we can’t get those kids a brand spanking new Wii! (Something that as yet no-one else has donated)

Bloody hell, Mr. Shadow! That’s a big ask isn’t it!?

Well, yes it is, Jimmy, but what’s the point of doing something if we’re not going to aim for the top? I think it would be a great achievement, if not the greatest achievement the forum has ever had, wouldn’t it be a wonderful feeling if we, collectively, were able to do something so generous for these kids?

But Mr. Shadow, how will we tackle this gargantuan task?

I’m glad you asked Jimmy, I have two plans to get to our target, but of course if anyone has any stellar ideas they’ll be rolled out too. First and foremost we’ll take donations of any amount that people want to chuck in – probably via PayPal, but if necessary I’ll try and get another system in place for any PayPalaphobes. Secondly we’re going to have something of a bring and buy sale; anyone can donate any game and then sell it to someone else on the forum, any money made from the sale will go into our Wii fund. I’m hoping that keeping it in-forum and flagging that the game is for our charity drive will bring out the generosity in our fellow forumites and will also mean that in the end we’ll be able to say that it was all our own work as opposed to putting it on ebay or something.

This’ll never work, this forum is full of scrooges!

Maybe, but I have more faith in this place than you, Jimmy. I think aiming for the top with the Wii gives us room to manoeuvre if we don’t manage to raise the cash, maybe get a DS or just some games. I’m also hopeful that allowing people to sell a game will make it easier for people to donate rather than having to give the cash in their pocket they just have to give up a game they’ve finished playing.

Mr. Shadow, this is a very long OP, I can't be arsed to read it all could you summarise it in some bullet points?

Absolutely Jimmy!

  • We want to buy a Wii for the kids at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
  • As a forum we need to raise £180
  • We’ll do this by donating cash or
  • Selling games to other people on the forum and donating the money raised.

This is an opportunity for us to show what a truly great community we are, and do something really special for some people who’re going to be having a real hard Christmas, so then, who’s with me?

Anyone who'd rather do a run of the mill bank transfer as opposed to PayPal drop me a PM and I'll give you my details. :)

This is a charity I can really get behind. It's well-known that videogames have great therapeutic value for very ill children - so you can count me in. Usual problem - need a way to get money to you without the use of a credit card (which I don't have). Once that's sorted, let me know and I'll chip in £10. Word. 8-)

The kid'll not want a Wii.

He'll want a cool and good console like an Xbox 360.

Sure I'll give a fiver, as long as we can raise a decent amount though.

I'll put a fiver in for this, if only for the mild, yet incredibly morbid comic value, of getting a seriously ill child to play Wii Fit.

Added a Donate button to the OP, I can't find anywhere on PayPal for it to display publicly how much has been raised so I'll just have to update the little totaliser thing every evening. Judging by the overwhelmingly positive response this has had I think we should hit the target in no time! Rock on guys! :D

And yet you can probably bet it's more useful than a video game.

Also Wii is gooseberry fool. Why inflict it on anyone, let alone the sick?

edit: That post comes off as overly negative. I'm jus' sayin'.
