From a reddit thread:

-There are no actual sailing mechanics. Remember Valheim? Yeah, forget it
-There's also no boarding. I mean, there's an animation that plays out when you close in on enemy ship and click "board", but that's it. It's also the same animation over and over.
-Blowing up ships magically transports their cargo to you
-Your ship has stamina that you can use for "sprinting", and replenish it with food.
-You can move on land with your captain (player character). But you can't do anything besides dressing him up and interacting with game mechanics, walking around is basically just obtuse interface
for some reason characters are speaking over modern loudspeakers, it's very jarring. Audio balance also seems to be all over the place, it's either very silent or deafening
-NPCs are super uncanny, their voice is desynced and the dialogue is very, very primitive

:dread: Yeah really sounds like a "Quadruple A game" ubisoft :fp:

How do you mess up AC Black Flag without the AC bits?! I was really in the mood for a good pirate game - just went through Black Flag (which was great when you ignore the AC bits!) and am reading Master and Commander. A crying shame.

The whole development of this game and what they've ended up with is just bizarre.

After Watch Dogs Legion, Avatar and now this I suspect Ubisoft will be merging and cutting jobs this year.

Skull and Bones should have just been a re skinned Black Flag Mod released years ago for free with purchasable skins for ships or as a £20 game.

Wish my image sig would work

Haha yeah very weirdly worded, especially as you can argue that all you do in Mario 64 is walk around and interact with game mechanics.

I think they mean that land is a glorified menu. Walk to various places to change cosmetucs/settings etc.

I’m still tempted to get this, despite all the negative press.

I’m thinking it would be a good idea to get Ubisoft+ for a month, and use it heavily for both Skull & Bones and Prince of Persia.

I very much get the impression that if Ubisoft weren't legally obligated to release this it would have been quietly cancelled years ago.

IGN gave this a 7 which is higher than Suicide Squad.

Although, I did enjoy the beta and I'm sure it will come to Ubisoft+ one day.

My bad!

I mean Ubisoft+ Classics on PS+. :fp:

Like a six month or year later to add in the library.

Ah ok. I didn’t realise there were tiers.

Yeah hopefully Game Pass soon enough too.

PCGamer wrote:I like Skull and Bones but I also resent it. It has the makings of a great pirate game but it's hamstrung by live service orthodoxy. It doesn't compare favourably with the ten-year old game that inspired it, unless one's measure of a good game is the amount of hours it can occupy in one's life. Still, to expect a blockbuster game about sailing big clumsy boats to be anything else in 2024 is foolhardy. This will do. Don't hate the player, hate the game. There's no way Skull and Bones could exist right now in any other form.

I gave this a go as I have Ubisoft+. Nearly every aspect of Black Flag has been made significantly worse. Nothing is broken as such, it's just it feels like a cheap copy of Black Flag with absolutely none of what made that great.

They would have been much wiser to have remastered Black Flag and just add a co-op mode.

Absolutely no way should anyone spend actual money to buy this as a standalone game. Only get it if you have it as part of a subscription. It might kill a few hours if you are extremely bored. Although if you have ubisoft + you'll likely have Blag Flag available anyway.

10 years to make this is an absolute disgrace.

For what it’s worth, this debuted at #4 on the physical All Formats Chart. Beaten by Mario vs. Donkey Kong at #1, Hogwarts Legacy and EA Sports FC 24.
