It still amazes me that they’ve taken so long to take the pirate element from Black Flag and release it as a standalone game. Not that they should have rushed it, but if this came out even in 2016 (so 3 years after Black Flag?), it’d have done really well in my opinion, it’s not even on my radar and probably won’t be.
Just played the technical test. Hampered by enormous text watermarks all across the screen to prevent videos/streaming, and it’s all NDAed up, but I think it’s OK to say it’s better than I’d expected and different enough to that other game for both to exist.
The problem I have is, if it's anything like AC4 ship combat (it looks like it is) well that to me is bad. I love AC Odyssey and HATE when I have to do ship combat to forward the story... can't stand it.
Didn't get anywhere near ship-to-ship combat in the test (it's from the very early stages of the game), but yeah, I can see it being that way. (But I liked that in the AC series.)
I played for two hours and I'm surprised how I enjoyed it to be honest. I think I will like it, but I'm not rushing buying it. I'm sure it will come to Ubisoft+ one day.
Gave this a play last night, up to when you get to the main island for the first time.... it's ok. Maybe it was just the tutorial section but it felt very dated from what I played. Might get better now the actual main part of the game has opened up for me but that initial tutorial area was just a bit dull.
Going to put some more time into it this weekend but glad they've done this open beta as it'll definitely sway people one way or another
Played a fair bit more this morning, yeah it's not for me. Feels very dated on an aged engine.
I didn't realise it was more ship based and alot of the world you only explore on your ship and even getting materials from islands you do from your ship along the beach. The 'mini-games' to saw wood etc make it feel like a mobile game. No hand-to-hand combat feels like a huge waste as all combat is built around ships etc.
You can tell this game has been in development for ages, everything just feels dated and aged and no where near a current gen feel release.
