Post‪Sky, Virgin Media and BT all increase their prices - 2023 edition (pg1‬7)
by KK » Thu Mar 19, 2015 10:38 pm

Engadget/Digital Spy/Daily Mail wrote:Sky's raising its TV prices to balance Premier League costs

Sky just spent a whopping £4.2 billion on Premier League broadcasting rights, so unsurprisingly, it's decided to make up some of the cost by increasing the prices of its various TV packages. The cheapest "Original" bundle will stay the same, but otherwise all of its satellite TV packages are set to receive a price increase on June 1st.

  • The "Variety" bundle will increase by £2 to £30 per month.
  • The "Family" bundle is climbing by £3 to £36 per month.
  • A £1 increase for Sky Sports, making it £25.50 per month for existing Sky TV customers.
  • The HD pack (legacy customers) will see an increase of £1.00.
  • Sky Movies is jumping by 50p to £17 per month.
  • Finally, Sky Sports and Sky Movies together, will see an increase of £1.50, making it £34.50 per month.

The changes will come into effect from June 1st, and Sky says it'll be notifying affected customers with a letter next month. In addition to Sky Sports, the broadcaster is attributing the new price increases to its latest slate of big-budget drama shows, which include Fortitude, Critical and Penny Dreadful. Of course, Sky is also spending big to keep its exclusive deal with HBO, which makes it the British home of shows such as Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire. Nevertheless, the new prices are sure to disgruntle at least some of Sky's TV subscribers; cord-cutting is a growing trend in the UK, but at least the broadcaster has NOW TV to scoop up viewers that want a cheaper monthly bill.

The timing of the announcement appears designed to limit media coverage. Details appeared on the firm’s website on Wednesday, when the nation’s attention was focused on George Osborne’s Budget.

Attempts to reach Sky spokesmen were frustrated by the fact most were at the London premiere of the new season of TV fantasy drama, Game of Thrones.

Normally, Sky would announce any price rise in September, however making the announcement then would have coincided with its loss of the TV rights for the Champions League to BT. It would have been obvious to viewers that they were being asked to pay more for less.

The inflation-busting increases will come into effect on June 1 and coincide with the middle of the latest series of Game of Thrones. Fans will effectively have to agree to the higher subscription.

Sky last increased their prices in September 2014.

BT must be doing cartwheels.

£61.50 a month to watch WWE RAW in HD? Up yours, Sky.

Netflix + DNS services + Freeview HD is enough for me. Plus a little piracy for GoT. :slol:

I have Virgin but think I will be ditching SS just shortly. Use my dads Sky Go on Xbox half the time for WWE and football anyway in another room, just not worth nearly £300 a year. Madness.

I absolutely love sky but hate the price. It's gone way out of control over the last few years. I would like to get rid but I really do use it so much.

I wonder if sky are about to hit the point where upping their prices means less overall revenue as they lose too many customers that it will counteract their price increases.

A lot of people who have cancelled Sky Sports (or cancelled completly) have often received letters in the post or phone calls offering them 50% off. And when they've refused that Sky have even gone as high as 75%.

No wonder Sky are giving away an LG 32'' TV to new subscribers as a bribe at the moment.

I'm pretty certain Sky's retentions department are the most powerful people in the corporation.

I did say last year they will do this despite losing champions league football. And the la liga rights are still up for grabs. The MLS does not interest me.

Maybe Sky should stop paying pointless pundits like Henry and reduce the price that way. All he does is sits there and states the obvious.

Going to be very expensive for sports fans next year with BT also expected to raise prices.

I think he's costing Sky £4 million per year.

Yeah, BT wont keep their sports free forever. And when they start charging, boy will they start charging.
Probably when they need to make back the £12.5billion from purchasing O2.

Yeah he's on four times as much as Neville is on. His agent did great getting him that contract because he literally adds nothing to the discussion. I don't mind Carragher, Souness or Neville.

So on average it's gone up about £2/year. That's probably about what you'd expect really.

BT Fibre Broadband & Phone - £46.99
BT TV HD Pack - £3
WWE Network - £9.99
NFL Pass - £2.49
NowTV - £6.99
Netflix - £6.99
Amazon Prime - £6.58

£83.03 a month (still £20 cheaper than Sky). It's just...ridiculous.

Literally the only downside to BT is you can only get Sky Sports 1 and 2, and it's not in HD. NowTV will go HD in the next few months (apparently...& at a TBA cost).

But they have not added anything to their programmes. It's basically been mostly repeats and they relied on sports. I don't know what they added to variety bundle to justify £2 increase from last year.

If BT get la liga and sensible pricing then they could be a threat. Because after next season they will have basically one prem game on weekends. Also champions league on weekdays.

I cancelled my sky as it was going upto £33 from £25. We will now use netflix only though I just trying 30 days of Amazon prime now it has subtitles which works well. Haven't decided if it worth £80 a year?

According to this site: http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bill ... -1900.html

£27 in 1997 should be £44.23 today. So it's running a bit ahead of inflation. I suppose the quality and quantity of the service has improved quite a lot too.
