So the future of warfare lies in the hands of cold, calculating machines. Just like in The Terminator :?

BBC News wrote:A striking example of a robot in need of careful programming is a driverless vehicle developed by the Pentagon, called the EATR. It can refuel itself on long journeys by scavenging for organic material - which raises the haunting spectre of a machine consuming corpses on the battlefield.
Its inventor, Dr Robert Finkelstein of Robotic Technology Inc, insists it will consume "organic material but mostly vegetarian."

Mostly? What the hell

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/8495946.stm

What do you all think about having robots doing our dirty work in war? I'm all for it, so long as the robot can differentiate between hostiles, friendly and innocent forces, of course. It'll save lives on both the innocent and friendly sides, and it could eradicate "blue-on-blue" incidents. But then again.....SkyNet :?

"The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is clear: To build and maintain those robots."

It's too late now. Robots have infiltrated every level of our society. They build our cars, make our food, heal us and now they'll kill us.

They won't kill us, they'll kill them. At least that's the idea.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

Am I the only one who thinks it'll be a bit boring?

If its just robots killing robots, being perpetually replaced, wont all wars go on ad infinitum?

At least if its people killing people, once one side has taking a good kicking, they realise fighting was a shitty idea.

I tell you what would be awesome. Robots without their own intelligence, just husks. Then you plug people in at a remote location and they can blast away.

Like the matrix or something.

I thought the film 2012 was a documentary made by time travellers and bought back so at least we can all see how we are about to die? I thought that was the reason such a gooseberry fool film was so popular?

Well the Predator drones that are being used in Iraq and Afghanistan now carry missiles and are frequently used instead of real human pilots.

Predator drones rock 8-)

Engadget wrote:DARPA job posting talks of developing an autonomous, grenade-wielding robot

DARPA's just put up a pretty interesting job posting... if you're the wary-of-our-future-being-controlled-by-robots type, anyway. The call involves a new research and development program called ARM. Basically, DARPA's looking to build a robot that can use its arms to dexterously and autonomously grasp objects. The quote from the job posting which is raising eyebrows around here says that the bot should be able to "hold an inert grenade with one hand, and pull the pin with the other hand" without any direction from humans. Now, we're not really trying to hit the alarmist angle, and we're all for advancements in robot tech... but it seems to us we'd have less to worry about if the job posting had said "should be able to hold a kitten in one hand, and pet it with the other." Right guys?

Damn that DARPA, didn't they learn from their involvement with Metal Gear Rex?

Skynet is also the name of the British armed forces communication satellite system.

I knew it was a satellite system somewhere, A pretty apt name for what is theoretically a net in the sky.
