PostSlowly coming back to gaming

Having no time due to family and a general loss of interest in games over the last 3-4 years I sold my 360 and Vita last year. I kept my PS3 as at the time I still needed it as a disc player and I had a lot of unplayed games via PS Plus. I began to find the fan noise too annoying for watching things on it (launch PS3 60gb still going) so I bought a standalone BD player for this and Netflix. As I still had no interest in games it went in the cupboard in January this year.

Last week I decided to pull the PS3 out of the cupboard, the kids are getting older now and nearer to an age I can get them involved in games. So I renewed my PS plus subs and started to play at some of the games I had. Not a lot of them inspired me but it did spark in an interest in me again. Started playing Jak and Daxter with my daughter she loved it so thats a good thing to share with her. I then saw some good offers on PSN and purchased the new Tomb Raider. Have to say I love it. Very much in the vain of the Uncharted games but for me it gels better then they ever did, always liked TR games for some reason. This one feels more gritty and I have to say it looks gorgeous on such old hardware and plays well. For the first time in nearly 2 years I want to play and finish a game :D . Hopefully it lasts.

So I guess what have I missed and should get, not looking at buying full price games though. New gen consoles still don't appeal at the moment as they are too much in cost to invest at this early stage of renewal and if I did it would be PS4 when there is something amazing on it. However I am tempted by Wii U to play more kid friendly games with the kids. Never got a Wii so the back catalog of games for that and the new stuff is appealing. Saw a great deal from Sainsburys the other day but now out of stock.

Defo going to borrow The Last of Us from a mate at work but any other recommendations from the last 18 month or so would be good.

Getting a Wii U to play its games and the Wii back catalogue is definitely a good idea. I'd also recommend that you try Demon's Souls; it's usually pretty cheap on the PS Store during sales.

Lego games are great for playing co-op with kids. There's a large and cheap back catalog of them too. Lego Batman 2 is £11 in our local Sainsburys for example.

I too am looking at buying a Wii U as my son (6) loves all things Nintendo, but there's still a fair bit of mileage left in our trusty old Wii.

Thank you for changing your avatar BTW.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

I hope its still not all reboots and HD remakes as that was one of the things that turned my off in the first place.

Already got Demon Souls via PS plus ages ago. Not my cup of tea really and hated the control system, tried it again last week and it just did not click. Not a big RPG fan if I am honest.

Lego games sound like a good idea had a few on the DS and my daughter quite liked attempting them. Its a must to get more interaction with the kids.

Yes, literally everything coming out is either a HD remake or an unfinished buggy piece of crap. I'd say not to bother ever playing a game again.

But in non nutjob talk, there's loads of promising stuff on the horizon and plenty of great stuff from over the past year and a bit. Some of my favourites from the past year and a bit you might want to looking into depending on the what you're after: The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Transistor, Broken Age, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Hohokum, Hotline Miami, DmC: Devil May Cry, Papers Please, Gone Home, and Tearaway.

Welcome back CG I would definitely give the last of us a go as the story and gameplay is brilliant but very tense ,not one of those games your kids should see you playing .I would easily recommend a Wii u ,there are some great deals on for it right now and for games for yourself and to play with your kids then Wii u is perfect.Mario kart 8 ,Mario 3d world and super Mario bros are the best .Add to this wind waker hd and you could also introduce your kids to the classics on the snes, nes and gba.

Thanks Degoose. Caved in and bought a WiiU Mario Kart deal and got Nintendo land for next to nothing. Will look at Mario World etc in a few weeks. Still waiting for it to complete updating before we can try it out. My daughters patience are wearing thin. Took an hour for it to actually keep a steady link to the servers, now waiting for the update to install. I thought the PS3 was painfulll but this takes the prize from that. God Nintendo whats wrong with your network and network hardware.

It's a lot better after the painful initial update.

Mario Kart, 3D World, Nintendo Land and Pikmin 3 are magnificent.
Lego City is great for kids (and adults) too, and Disney Infinity could be worth a look.

yeah that update is a pain but it adds a lot to the setup and is fine afterwards. I think the update is actually to fix some of the issues caused during the first update so they don't happen again. By the way we have mario kart 8 mondays so add a load of us to your friends lists, the names are in the OP in the official mario kart 8 thread.

You should look at de Blob and de Blob 2 on Wii - two of my favourite games of last gen, great for kids (I imagine) and you can get them for a fiver each.

Welcome, CrystalGipsy, to the mighty Image.

I see that some of our Ambassadors of Funk have already helped out with guidance and suggestions. Spindash is spot on about the de Blob games; and personally I'd recommend Boom Blox as a fun for all-ages game, too.

When you're ready, come on over and join us here! That thread contains lots of guidance for new U owners in the opening post.

Ive got to get good at Mario Kart before I venture online as I am currently hopeless. Great fun though. Loving the console, the controller is so well done and I love you can play some games on it and not the TV as well as Netflix. My Nintentdo name is of course crystalgipy. See you online at somepoint.

The best way to get good is to play online. I've spent the vast majority of my time online and I think that I've only completed 4 of the cups in single player.
