Smash Bros. Switch - 12th June Late Night Invitational Tournament

Smash Bros. 4 DX? Smash 5? Sakurai once mentioned Smash for Wii U is Smash 5, so Smash 6? Whatever strawberry floating smash this is, it's coming to switch so we got a new hype train pullin in.

Thread for speculation and discussion on anything new that may pop up over the course of this year. Of course, once it's out, matchmaking, tournaments, salt, etc.

I personally would like it to be a new Smash since Smash 4 is garbage, but we'll see. If it's an enhanced port, I just hope that means the mechanics will be tweaked a little to allow for better movement and reward players for more aggressive options, and that balance patches become a regular occurrence again.

Just out of interest, is the general opinion of Smash 4 that it's garbage? I only has the 3DS version and it was in Japanese back when I was but a beginner, so I didn't warm to it. I didn't really warm to Brawl either and for me, the series seems to have peaked with Melee.

Just realised the big downside of this is that it means Sakurai won't be working on a Switch Kid Icarus anytime soon :(

(He probably wasn't going to be anyway, but still)

Why does everyone keep referring to Smash games by numbers (and contrasting numbers, no less)

Glad they've finally announced it, I just hope they don't follow their Smash Wii U tactic of hideously overpriced DLC...

Bring back Snake pls

I think because of the clumsy Wii U/3DS names where they did away with the fighting synonym. People settled on the shorthand of Smash 4 rather than Smash Wii U or whatever. I don’t really know why the Wii U one was deemed 4 though as I’ve seen the 3DS version called Smash 5 but that came out a month earlier technically....

That's Christmas sorted for my son, all they need to do now is announce Pokemon at E3 with a release by year end and it'll be his best Christmas ever.

Is this a brand new entry (possibly Unreal Engine 4) or another Mario Kart DX scenario?

The series goes

64 - Melee - Brawl - 4

And just ignore there was a 3DS game

Inklings and BOTW link make this immediately interesting, anyway, even if I'm not much of a smash fan

That reveal man! I was all excited when they said they had one more thing to show, then the splatoon video started and I was a wee bit disappointed. I thought it was maybe going to be an animated series or something. Then that bombshell. They always do a good reveal for smash games. The snake one was good.

We don’t know yet but there’s been nothing to suggest it’s only a port. The logo is a different font, the reveal had BOTW link, and Bandai Namco weren’t mentioned in the copyright. Plus, if it’s just a port I don’t think they’d reveal it like that.

My guess is it uses the same engine and assets but it’s more of a Splatoon 2 scenario whereby they add enough new content for it to be a sequel.

Yeah it's not clear whether or not it'll be a totally new game or an enhanced port yet.

As mentioned, new logo and BOTW Link (could be just a costume though) kinda hint it'll be new.

But the game being planned for a release this year makes me wonder how much time they've been developing it. There was a six years gap between Melee and Brawl, and between Brawl and Wii U/3DS. Not saying a completely new title isn't possible, but this shorter timeframe makes me think it's going to be an enhanced port like MK8 Deluxe. New characters/stages/modes, better graphics and maybe some new mechanics, but virtually the same core game.

If it's a new game you'd think they'd want to make that a bit more clear, since a lot of people are convinced this isn't new. They may have been tempted to go with just a deluxe edition of 4 since it'll still sell very well.

Despite my scepticism though, I'm pretty 50/50 on whether or not I think this'll be a properly new title.

If it releases in Q4 it will have been 4 years since the Wii U release, and if they’re using the same engine that’s more than enough time for development.

Also, the six years between past titles didn’t mean six years of development. Smash 4 started in March 2012 (although announced at E3 2011, Sakurai was on Kid Icarus until March 2012) and was released in Sept/Oct 2014. And they were making a 3DS version at the same time.

So Link moveset speculation....

Bombs -> same (they are just sheika slate bombs now)
Bow -> same
Boomerang -> Cryonis?
Spin Attack -> Revali's Gale (if touching the ground) into Sailcoth
Grab -> Magnesis? No hookshot but magnesis could work as a tether grab (everyone is magnetic now sure)
Final smash - same (but with added stasis effect for freezing the target in place)

Revali’s Gale for spin attack makes a lot of sense.

For the final smash, how about the Divine Beasts combining like they do against Ganondorf in BOTW?

I can’t imagine he’d be involved if it wasn’t just a Deluxe version with a few extra characters.
