Sonic's a safe bet for staying in, I can see Pacman and Megaman sticking around too. Not as sure about Ryu and Cloud, if they're in then it's more likely as DLC again than in the base roster. Bayonetta is a safer bet for DLC but tbh she can go jump off a strawberry floating cliff if they don't balance her some.

In terms of who I'd be okay with losing to make way for newcomers, I'd say Lucina, Dark Pit, Palutena and at a push Robin and Greninja (latter is probably getting switched out for Decidueye or Incineroar). Other than that I don't really know who'd get dropped. Ganondorf maybe, but I'd rather see him get an update from just a Cap clone, although unlike Link BotW doesn't really give him anything to work with in terms of new stuffHyrule Warriors design instead pls?

The only character who hasn't been in smash in any form outside of trophies yet who probably should be in without much argument is Dixie Kong. From a design point of view she would probably make a nice in-between Diddy and Donkey in terms of play style (like a light-weight grappler or something).

I really want to make a joke prediction, but aside from basic attacks and final smash I can't think how a snooker player would work in a fighting game.
Can we just get Mii's returning with more class options? That way a whole host of sports can become available.

Bayo is part owned by Nintendo since they funded Bayo 2 and 3, so I would actually be very surprised if she's not a base character in future installments.

Pauline
Rex (Xenoblade Chronicles 2)*
Ridley*

Midna/Wolf Link*
Incineroar OR Decidueye OR Lycanroc OR Gen 8 Pokemon

Olimar out

Outfield prediction --->Characters to be bundled together by studio and a team mechanic added - this will largely be done as DLC.

For instance -
Ryu/Megaman/Arthur - Capcom
Rabbid (able to switch costumes)/Rayman - Ubisoft

Who I really want to see -

Geno, Midna, Travis Touchdown, KK Slider, Tails, Phoenix Wright, Sparkster, Krystal

may i ask about your logic for your predictions? or is just gut feeling? just curious

Well ARMs is a brand new franchise so a new world for Nintendo to tap into, they promote it a lot so Spring Man is a shoe in.
I think theres a lot of fans pushing for Waluigi, hes becoming kinda iconic so I think he gets the nod this time.
I also think it'd be super easy to now get Rayman in, and a lot of people seem to want him.
Rex makes sense as they have pushed Xenoblade a lot.
Just for fan reaction I think they will finally go with Ridley.
Midna is just a very popular character who would play totally differently. I think she'll get in from fan pressure.
Isabelle is also a very popular Mario Kart character. If the Squid Kids get in, I can see her getting a spot too - although I'd prefer the KK.
The Pokemon I think maybe Lycanroc. Hes very popular online, has two different forms, isnt the same type as other pokemon and is from a yet unrepresented typing and Gen. Otherwise I think a Gen 8 Pokemon is likely, unless Incineroar isnt in Pokken for a reason...
Shovel Knight seems ;like it would be easy to do, and again - a very popular choice.
Sora would make more of a splash this time than Cloud again, so I could see them doing the switch.

Only characters I'm arsed about them getting rid of are the 282392348944442 different Fire Emblem ones they currently have.

Just get rid of the counter on every one of them, please. I'm sick of characters that are just "X but heavier". Robin is fine, Corrin is fine, Marth is fine, Ike is fine because they're different enough. Give Roy something that's not just "Marth but slower" and we're good. Drop Lucina or give her something that's not just "Marth but without the spacing mechanic".

Smash Bros could be half FE characters for all I care, but there's an issue with them all being too samey. Give me an axe user, or a spear user, for example. Not every FE character needs to be a sword user with a counter.

Do any Fire Emblem characters use a longstaff? It'd be interesting to see the kind of moves able to be pulled off with one in a Smash game. Then again, maybe one could be included in my idea of expanding the Mii Fighter classes.

There's only been 1 fire emblem protagonist to use a lance as their main weapon and he was a shared-protagonist.

Replace Roy with my true boy Adol. He has always been a perfect character for Smash and I think it's about time Adol is celebrated.

Roy is different enough. Especially in 4. In 4 he's generally a lot faster as well.

Actually I'd like to see a new F-Zero character as a precursor to a new F-Zero game. Jody Summer, Michael Chain, Samurai Goroh or THE mummy strawberry floating BLACK BULL would all be interesting choices.

I've been saying this for years, and it's the Black Shadow, the Black Bull is his machine

No I specifically meant the machine, I don’t care about the black shadow.

Less than 2 weeks till we get our first look of the game in the form of the Invitational Tournament. Said to take place immediately after the Splatoon 2 finals, which I believe start at 9PM our time (1PM PT).

The players invited are

Smash 4: ZeRo, MKLeo, Abadango, Mr. R
Melee: Armada, Mango, Plup, Lucky

Should be hype

The lineup of players is good. Nice and diverse.

I like the lineup for Melee in particular...but it seems almost tailored made to try and get Melee players on board. Mango, Armada AND Plup? It's just too good. Lol at how Lucky got in, but I like him too and he is popular, just an outlier by comparison. Still I can't help but think that's a calculated pick as well since he's thought of as cool, whereas there are a ton of other players with much higher profiles that are a bit dweeby (Wizzrobe, M2K).

Regardless I'm interested in how the game looks/plays and if they will opt for a more serious all-itemless bracket, considering these are all serious competitors and it's a thinner draw than last time.

I can't wait to body Jezo in his new favourite game also.
