The game is 100% finished - it was even sent to Mario Club for debugging and testing. The leaked ROM is a beta version. It was confirmed by Eurogamer speaking to a programmer on the project. The only reason they didn't release the game was it did some things better than Miyamoto did in Starfox 64 while it was still in development, and Nintendo hate being shown up. So they canned the game at the last minute, implemented various 3D features in Starfox 64 (and possibly Mario 64 as well) so that it would look better next to PS1 and Saturn games.

They never even paid Argonaut for it. Nintendo are known to have pinched a lot of stuff from their partners and taken credit for it or dumbed it down in some way. They've even completely destroyed games from Western developers who they cannot form a working relationship with because they have incredibly stubborn working practices, and Japanese is basically impenetrable, but it's gotten better over the years with Retro Studios, NST (I think?) etc.

Including the infamous Super Mario ROM from the Internet (but that's partly because it seems some of Nintendo's own archival copies / ROMs are missing or corrupted and so it was faster to just download it. After all, it's their intellectual property and was never licensed to be distributed in any other format than a cartridge).

That's essentially the topic of the video I posted a few pages back. Nintendo well screwed over Argonaut. They even canned a nigh complete 3D Yoshi game they made which went on to become the flawed but decent Croc.

Not so much of a problem for those of us that were gaming back then, but for newer gamers they will wonder what the fuss is about. Compared to the timeless classics such as Super Mario World and Kart, Metroid and Zelda, it's going to look pretty rough.

Man that's pretty shitty of Nintendo to lock Jawa and Errkal out of the game like that.

Want that also rumoured to have been shown to Nintendo to get the gig to make a good game and then Nintendo began making Mario 64 once they'd seen it?

Speaking of my accidental trip to Mecca here are some photos plus a bonus SNES retro rarity (I think, never seen before) and a Famicom just for Qikz.

I do kinda wish I just walked in to see what happened, apparently other people have and if you explain you're a big fan they'll show you around.

SNES carrier hardcases. I guess for carrying around to ur mates for a round of Street Fighter II. You probably won't need these now.

Image

Famicom with Ninja Turtles and what I think is possibly a Nintendo Colour TV Game 6

Image

And yes that's a gigantic GameBoy classic with a working TV in it - I'll post more in the Retro thread if people want, totally forgot I had this series..

I'll try to do it for Retro Weekender as a "collection of photos", probably another landslide post, they all need converting from massive RAWs and I don't have time to get carried away right now.

It took 3 attempts to find the right hard disk, there really is quite a lot of cool stuff I there I doubt many people have seen before. Also had some pics from Super Potato in Osaka.

Edit: Sadly nothing really, my brother was rushing me along. :x

See what you can spot in this full size photo, this entire isle is a SNESgasm.

So cool... I dream of visiting a store like that! Albeit a Mega Drive one, obvs ;) .

Gecko, it'd be ace to see your giant GameBoy / TV in the Weekender thread :toot: .

Super Potato sell literally everything. I just took a single photo of SNES games for some reason.

I really wanted to spend some more time there, I even had about £100 to spend and the prices wouldn't have been stupid back then. I mulled over the idea of getting a DSi or a 3DS (I actually caught the launch of the 3DS while I was there, and played a demo pod in a megastore which was cool, felt a bit like my own mini E3 experience). I mean they were good for Japan, but the exchange rate at the time was really awful. To give you an idea, a single banana cost 90p. But retro games themselves weren't so expensive. I think tourists also drive the price up for those places and they basically become museums. You get the good deals from indie stores in Japan and markets in Shibuya (which I didn't visit).

I'm currently saving to go back one day so maybe I'll return with 1 or 2 token purchases just so I can treasure them coming from the motherland.

Oh what I do have are 2 little miniature Mario Kart Wii RC karts with mini bananas and shells, that's pretty decent. They were the equivalent of like £5 each from a thrift store.

I'm gonna go get them to live on my desk, after we pared back the living room from so much tat.

To the person who said Starwing is unplayable - far from it!

I booted it up on my trusty old SNES the other day and had a blast.

It's certainly more playable than Star Fox Zero...but that's not hard.

I cannot wait for Starfox 2!!!

If they could reach a similar agreement with Konami, then yeah - it'd be ace to see Bomberman and Zombies Ate My Neighbors :) .

Both Super Probotector and Super Castlevania IV were published by Konami, so they were probably just limiting the third-party titles. It's surprising the Super Bomberman series never came to the virtual console, given Nintendo appears to have a good relationship with both Hudson and Konami.

Oops, good spot, Celer - I didn't see those two!

Super Bomberman '94 arrived for the Wii U recently, perhaps offering far better value than the newer Switch game!

I like Starfox, but you are off your strawberry floating tree if you think that. Especially in PAL.

Larry Bundy Jr is a massive shithead who likes to makes things up. A lot of that video was debunked in the corosponding GAF thread.

http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1328992

Please stop watching Larry Bundy Jr videos.

True or not I had heard the Star Fox 2 story, the DKC story and that Croc started as a Yoshi game way before I saw Larry's video. Furthermore I find the guy entertaining so I'll keep watching.
