PostSo I've just fractured my ankle...
by hamm sandwich » Wed Apr 10, 2013 3:05 pm

Last night during my weekly 5 a side football practice I got an almighty kick on my ankle as I was about to unleash a deadly shot and half Eduardo'd myself. After a night of 'I'll sleep on it and hope the swelling goes down' it didn't and after a pointless trip to the walk in centre this morning I was referred to A&E for an x-ray where I was told it was fractured and required a cast. I'm absolutely devastated :( I've never broken a bone before and recently turned my life around through exercise which has helped me lose a lot of weight and meet a great girl. The thought of weeks of recuperation and inactivity is one thing, the fear of regressing to my old ways another.

I really don't know what to do with myself. The fracture is on the outside of my right ankle and as it's not a break the recovery can be a bit more complex and the time involved a bit ambiguous. One minute I'm thinking they'll give me something to reduce the swelling and go home and the next I'm being plastered up and being coached on how to use crutches..

I had only entered the local half marathon yesterday and the doctor I saw told me it could be six months before I can exercise to that level of intensity, I am feeling really low just now.. The guy I made contact with is like half my size and surprisingly unhurt. This upsets all the plans I've made for the next few months

Has anyone here been through something similar? Hopefully you can offer me some encouragement as I'm feeling quite sorry for myself just now. I feel utterly helpless :(

Firstly....Man up.

Secondly, you can continue to exercise doing sit-ups and a few weights can you not?

Thirdly, how serious are you with this girl. Is she your girlfriend who will stay with you through the 'traumatic experience' or have you literally only just met her and now won't be able to take her on dates? Surely you can cook for her or somehting?

Work on your upper torso with the intent of handwalking your way through the half marathon.

I had an awful break back at uni, just a freak accident from a normal tackle when at rugby training. At first they thought it was just a fractured ankle and needed a cast, but it turned out to be a peculiar 'shock wave' type thing, that had split the ligaments between my leg bones, broke the bone straight through near my knee... as well as fracturing my ankle. It required an operation to put pins through my bones to hold them together.

I couldn't do much more than hobble for 6 months or so (although using crutches gave me massive shoulders).

But, to be honest, that was the making of me as I am today. I was determined to be rehabilitated and I'm fitter now than I've ever been. I became a very competent rugby referee, I've just have been accepted into an unit of the TA (although plenty more training to go before I pass that test), am running a marathon in a few weeks. So yeah, it does suck and I was pretty glum for a while, but you'll heal eventually. Just use it as a motivator.

Edit - And you can't do upper body stuff until that cast is off! Just watch what you eat, it's impossible to exercise yourself thin anyway.

I got smashed in Germany once and broke my ankle walking up a hill to take a piss.

I had a cast in Germany, they wanted to operate, but because I had no insurance (when you get injured at Rock AM Ring you are sent to a private hospital) I refused, got here, was off my feet for like 3 months, no surgery, put on weight, played xbox, watched loads of porn.

6/10

I bet it's even better if you got a misses, unless she's a bit shallow and only loves you for your ability to walk and gooseberry fool. On that note, have fun taking a gooseberry fool!

This for sure, because you'll be laying around more, just eat a lot more sensibly, and just general getting to and from places requires a lot more energy, so you should stay healthy ish.

Who the strawberry float needs coaching on using crutches? It's hopping with stabilisers.

It's fine if you have two healthy legs, but when screwing up feels like the bone is being pulled out of your leg, you are a bit more tentative. I slipped over once and I could barely talk from the pain.

Indeed.

Trufax that weight loss is pretty much 90% diet alongside 8% exercise.

....the other 2% is voluntary purging but I don't recommend that for a noob.

I dislocated my right knee cap a few years ago. That was the worst pain I've ever felt, definitely no way to sleep on it and see if it goes away. Couldn't walk without crutches for a fortnight and was medically banned from driving for a month. Spent that time working from home on my parents sofa and when I could use my leg again it had gotten a lot scrawnier from no use.

I broke my foot on Monday night playing 5-a-side, bored out of my tree stuck in my flat these past 2 days.
