My wife’s brother is the sort to rant on and on about things. We’ve encouraged our son to say “Ra ra ra ra ra” in a mocking voice whenever anybody asks what his uncle says.

So it's 30 hours late, but Quick to GRcade!

Lyra was born Friday morning, 8lbs 4 oz. She's an absolute potato. First nappy changes are properly grim and I've had about 3 hours kip. She's struggling to latch on when it comes to feeding so we're just persevering with that.
Had my first holy gooseberry fool moment just as I started typing this out, scared the gooseberry fool out of me.

Hospital floors are not comfy.

Still

Also, don't let the midwives bully you into Exclusively breast feeding if she's not latching well.

My first son, Finn, nearly died at 24 hours old because he wasn't eating, and the midwives made my missus feel like gooseberry fool because we wanted to bottle feed instead, just to get something in him.

Same thing happened when Oscar was born, he was latching, but not getting anything out because he's got a slight tongue tie.
I told the midwives to stick it and went and found the cupboard they kept the mini formula bottles in.

If your missus is adamant about breast feeding but it's not happening, just keep an eye on her as she might start feeling that she's "failed" etc. Keep her reassured that growing the baby and giving birth was phenomenally amazing as it is, it's ok to go to formula, she hasn't failed at all :)

Also, Photek is spot on. Bottle fed babies sleep soooooo well.

Both of mine were sleeping through the night since 6-7 weeks old.

Supoib!

Yeah moo refused to latch and spent most of a day and night crying, the midwife was very good and went shall we try a bottle of cow and gate, she chugged it and was asleep by the end of the bottle. Since then she has been formula fed (sma the power cow and gate didn't work well for us at all).

Moo is the health holiest in our post natal group with the other rbaby that was formula fed, the 5 that were boob fed always have colds so really I'm not seeing the benefit of boob feeding.

I guess if you have the perfect diet it has everything, but for the average person formula will be better.

+1 for Aptamil. Both my boys grew up on this.

I now have a 5'1" 9 & 3/4 old, and a 4'7" 8 & 1/4 old so there's certainly nothing wrong with them

Congrats Fin

I gave up breast feeding Ella after 4 weeks, she was a biter! Gave her SMA after that. The midwives kept trying to get me to carry on breast feeding but it was better for the both of us that we switched! She wasn't getting enough from me (she was 9lb 11oz born!) But bottle wise she was fed quicker and seemed happier.

She's now one of the tallest in her class, and she's hardly ever ill at all, turning 11 in august. Breast ain't always best!

For what it's worth, the studies tend to say that breastfeeding is slightly better for your baby while they're a baby. There's not a great deal of evidence that it's impactful later on in and of itself, though other factors loosely related to breastfeeding - how much physical contact you had with them when they were a baby, your willingness to listen to NHS advice about parenting, etc. - do obviously impact childhood development.

I'm not an expert (or a parent!) but from skimming studies I've seen in medical journals, I think one of the most impactful things a new parent can do is just hold/cuddle and talk to their baby as much as possible. Apparently that can make a really big long-term difference.

There has been untold amounts of research into breast Vs bottle over the years and generally the outcome seems to be that yes, breast is probably better, but it's not anything like as big a deal as some like to make out.

We've had 3 kids now and each had a varying mix of breast and bottle, at the end of the day do what works for you, mum and baby!

There are supposed to be some significant psychological benefits to breastfeeding and it helps with bonding and reducing the risk of post natal depression, but if it's not working for you then the worst thing you can do is best yourself up about it!

Talking and stuff is massive.
We have never baby talked moo and just talked to her like normal and her communication is brilliant some in groups haven't done that so much and it really shows.
