I watching Stephen Fry in America, and he has just visited a jail. The warden said that he doesn't let the death row inmates out encase they run away and force the guards to kill them. My thought was why do you care about killing inmates who are going to be executed later anyway.

Because there's always a chance of them receiving a pardon at some point.

Because they don't want to be the ones to kill them?

Plus I'd imagine there'd be more mess. You don't want to risk ruining the heart which can be eaten to gain their courage.

The changes of that seem pretty slim.

Not slim enough, though. Imagine someone who has been wrongly put on death row. He is desperate to get away from there, because he has done nothing wrong, and certainly doesn't want to be executed. So he tries to escape, and gets shot. Then his conviction is overturned.

Isn't in obvious? Let's say you were a guard. Inmate 20654 is set to executed next July. He has been on deathrow for three years, and you see him everyday. One day, three months before his execution, he makes a run for an open gate.

Would you want to be the one to shoot him? Plus, killing on inmate, deathrow or not, will always look bad on a warden.

You may as well ask why they don't just take them out behind the courthouse and shoot them after a conviction.

I've always wondered why there isn't more To Kill A Mockingbird-style justice doled out in this country. It'd make boring Wednesday evenings pass quicker if you could post about it on forums.
