A Song of Ice and Fire

If I'm honest I doubt I'll read Winds of Winter now, it's been too long and my memory of the books has been wiped out by the TV show.....I'd have to at least read Dance of Dragons again to get back into the swing of it...I'd probably have to reread everything from a Storm of swords....and I really can't be doing with a feast for crows again....

I'll continue with the TV show and then read an abridged version if the book ever does come out.

I can't even remember where it left Tyrion. I remember Jorah being with him and they were both in a kind of circus.

Maybe I'm not remember this right. It was very weird. Tyrion was incredibly bitter in ADWD.

I mean Tyrion did have reason to be bitter. He'd recently discovered that his father had his wife gang-raped and Jaime knew about it. Plus the woman he was in love with was sleeping with his father.

End of ADWD saw Jorah and Tyrion enlisted into one of the mercenary bands outside Meereen iirc, think he persuaded Brown Ben to double cross the others and go back to Dany's side?
That's one of the big things I'm looking forward to seeing in the book's version of events, the seige of Meereen was really rushed and instantly solved by "lol dragons" on TV so I'm looking forward to some more nuance in WOW. Plus as always strawberry float YEAH VICTARION

It is implied that it was the Lannister's for a long time in the books. But that isn't exactly true.

Thought I'd find this thread out as GRRM announced today that TWOW won't be releasing in 2018.

Obviously I'm a little disappointed about this but at the same time I get the feeling he really isn't enjoying writing the mainline series as much as he once was, hence the other books he's released between ADWD and now. I do find it slightly bizarre that back in 2015 he seemed to be implying that TWOW would be releasing at some point in the near future but 3 + years later we still don't even have a pencilled in release date for it. I'm finding it hard to believe that it'll all be wrapped up in TWOW and ADOS.

I don't think I'll even consider re-reading the series before TWOW comes out, I love the series but I'm busy reading other stuff when I get chance to read.

Complete speculation here, but I think his struggle writing the latest book stems from the story becoming too unwieldy. There's only so many characters, locations and sub-plots you can introduce before it becomes a nightmare to all tie together.

Or he could just be happy with the money he's made from the TV show and subsequent book sales, and so just isn't particularly motivated to get it finished.

His many distractions are a big factor. Never really expected it this year and don't hold out much hope for early next year either. The fact that he broke the timelines and made it too complicated/ unwieldy is undoubtedly a factor as well.

He's probably stymied in trying to sort it out into a single volume or two. I actually doubt we'll ever see it finished satisfactorily.

I do agree with you all, he just has too many characters/story arcs going on currently. He had a similar issue with a previous book (can't remember if it was AFFC or ADWD) in that he just couldn't get his head round the many plots and characters he had on the go, hence the lengthy delays with those as well.

Don't get me wrong, more books in and about the world are always welcome but at this stage I'd really like him to just focus on the main series. In a dream scenario he'll have TWOW finished and be waiting till ADOS is much closer to completion to release TWOW so we don't have a 7 + year gap between the (supposed) last two books in the series. I very much doubt this will happen though.

I've said this before, but he kind of strawberry floated himself by killing off loads of his characters. As great and as shocking A Storm of Swords was, AFFC and ADWD have had to rebuild a lot of the momentum in the overall plot, and they were kind of lacklustre in a lot of ways. New big bads had to be established or brought forward.

I also agree that the story is too expansive. He needs to reign the world and characters in a lot. Funnily enough, killing off more characters would get him more focus.
