PostSongs with nonsensical lyrics.
by Ironhide » Wed May 02, 2018 10:18 pm

Heard this a few weeks ago when my mum had an old episode of Top of the Pops on and I haven't been able to stop randomly singing the gibberish chorus ever since.

Anyone else have a similar thing with nonsensical lyrics?

Most SOAD songs qualify to some extent (makes sense given their Dadaist influences), but this takes the biscuit:

It's weird because on the album this comes straight after a really poignant song about the Armenian Genocide.

Edit - I-E-A-I-A-I-O is another highlight (and also I find the chorus really catchy for some reason):

Basically every fall out boy song.

As long as you don't actually listen to the words or pay attention to them they sound good but make no sense at all.

The poignancy of Lonely Day is completely eroded by the grammar fail in the chorus. Genuinely have never been able to take it seriously.

I've always thought Buck Rogers by Feeder is kind of nonsense. Great chorus hook though.

I think the appeal of it is specifically because if the words make no sense then you are focusing in the musical timbre, the melody and the rhythm of syllables etc.

I don't intellectualise lyrics really at all which is why I can't remember any of them except some of the most famous and then only some lines. My brain just doesn't care about it. I also scat sing all the time. If anything I find lyrics distracting from whatever emotions or other meaningful experience I'm looking for in the music.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Somebody Told me By the Killers is absolute nonsense.

In fact there are a few killers songs that actually don't mean much when you break it down.

Smile like you mean it for example too, nice lyrics, but when you tie in 4 or 5 lines together they just don't link.

Rihanna: Work

Not only did it sound rubbish, but the lyrics were complete balls.

I like how when that came out everyone went, “no they mean ‘denser’, it makes sense” but then The Killers turned round and said “no, we do mean dancer”. Right.

And by extension, every Mars Volta song.

I utterly love it but I haven't a strawberry floating clue what they're singing about.

Oasis songs. All of them.

Their genius lay in making you not realise how stupid the lyrics were.

I'd like to be somebody else and not know where I've been
I'd like to build myself a house out of plasticine
Ah, shake along with me
Ah, shake along with me
I've been driving in my car with my friend Mr. Soft
Mr. Clean and Mr. Ben are living in my loft
Ah, shake along with me
Ah, shake along with me
I'm sorry but I just don't know
I know I said I told you so
When you're happy and you're feeling fine
Then you'll know it's the right time
Then you'll know that it's the right time
To shake along with me
Shake along with me
Shake along with me
Shake along with me
Mister Sifter sold me songs
When I was just sixteen
Now he stops at traffic lights
But only when they're green
Ah, shake along with me... etc

Objectively, that's awful. Honestly I wrote comparable lyrics in my band when I was 12.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen.
